My son has started taking classes and is a green belt now. After training for 8 years at another TaeKwonDo School, I have been thoroughly impressed with the instruction and dedication that Mr. Baker and his instructors have for the students here. After I have seen the tenants being taught and used more often by my son, I have returned to taking classes as well from Mr. Baker. The School promotes inclusion and equality in all things. I recently visited Virginia Taekwondo Academy to enroll my son in their jiu-jitsu classes. The owner, Scott Baker, told me to bring him in on Tuesday for a trial run. However, when my wife arrived with my son for the 5pm class, she was informed that we had the wrong spot and that they hadn't been informed about bringing kids to the class due to it being full. What bothered me was the lack of apology or acknowledgment of the miscommunication. Instead, my wife was insulted in front of other parents, with suggestions that she was clueless or confused about the school. As someone who values customer service, I believe it's essential to treat customers with respect and apologize when mistakes happen. Perhaps in the future, the academy could handle such situations more professionally.

My daughter has been a dedicated student at Virginia Tae Kwon Do for several years. During this time, we have invested not only our time and money—$110 per month plus testing fees and gear—but also our trust in the leadership of this school. She progressed from white belt to black belt through hard work and discipline.

Unfortunately, that same level of discipline and professionalism has not been modeled by the school’s leadership. The head instructor, Mr. Baker, regularly brings his personal political views into the classroom environment. He has shared disturbing anecdotes about immigrants and political talking points that are completely inappropriate for a space where he holds authority over young students. This is especially harmful in a diverse class that includes Black and Brown children, some of whom may be personally affected by the issues he references.

I respectfully asked Mr. Baker to keep politics out of the classroom and to be mindful of the impact his words could have on children. He agreed, and he said that he wouldn't bring it up again. However, we soon found out that he was continuing to discuss his views. We tried to address it again. Rather than engaging in a thoughtful dialogue or committing to maintaining a neutral, inclusive environment, he told me our daughter's membership was canceled within minutes of our follow-up conversation. No regard for her years of dedication or accomplishments. Just immediate dismissal.

It is deeply disappointing that a student who put in the work to reach black belt status is now forced to find another school—not because of poor behavior or lack of commitment, but because the instructor prioritized pushing his personal agenda over providing a respectful, inclusive environment for all students.

I sincerely hope Virginia Tae Kwon Do reconsiders how it handles both parent concerns and the power dynamic that exists between instructors and children. Martial arts should teach integrity, respect, and self-control—not fear, division, or ideology.

My son has been attending Virginia TaeKwonDo & Jiu-Jitsu Academy for less than a year, and it has been an incredible experience for him. Being smaller than his peers, team sports have always been a challenge, but martial arts has given him a place where he can thrive. He trains twice a week (Monday and Saturday) and has already moved up to a yellow belt. He takes pride in tying his belt himself, and it’s clear he genuinely wants to do well.

One of the best parts is how the discipline and respect taught in class are carrying over at home—his little brother has already started mimicking his “yes sirs.” I’m hoping to enroll them both when his brother is old enough.

Mr. Baker is fantastic with the kids. He keeps things fun, making them laugh, but also holds them accountable and ensures they’re learning. Virginia TaewonDo has been an amazing experience for our shy son. Seeing him come out of his shell in class has been heartwarming as a parent. I enrolled my son to have him try Martial Arts. He really wasn't excited about it but I asked him to try for a month. After the first week where Mr. Baker allowed him to come to his Taekwondo classes and to his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu my son fell in love with it. He said I want to do this and I want to get as many belts as I can. My each time he gets a new stripe to be able to test for the next belt he get super happy. We recently moved from sunny SoCal to Chesapeake, VA. In San Diego, our daughter was a red white belt in karate. Moving to Chesapeake proved finding a really good karate dojo challenging. After trying a couple and not seeing the discipline and teaching excellence we were used to, our daughter decided to give TaeKwonDo a try.

This academy is everything we were looking for, teaching respect and discipline while focusing on technique. Mr. Baker is amazing with the children and the instructors are top notch! Our daughter was not thrilled at having to give up all her hard work and start back at a white belt, but she's finding herself enjoying learning new techniques.

Had a terrible experience with another academy and was very hesitant to try jiu jitsu at another place. Wow. Coach Baker has been amazing with my special needs son. My son has actually ASKED to go to jiu jitsu, something that wasn’t happening before. He is patient, kind, and clear with his instructions. Virginia TKD is awesome. As a parent, I find great value in the experience being provided to my child. Not only is he having tons of fun while learning Tae Kwon Do, lessons appropriate for home and school behavior are being reinforced. As a parent and your child is getting older, you realize that you can't always be there to help.
Mr. Baker instills a value, I feel, that we have lost when I was a child. He encourages my child to use words first, but if that does not work, then (with my permission) my child may use what he has learned in his studio. Thank you to the Virginia TKD and BJJ Academy. Scott Baker and his team of exceptional professionals are the best I have ever seen. Discipline, courtesy and self control are just a few of the great qualities he is teaching our three children. As a retired Senior Chief, he is a large influence in helping develop our future. This is a priceless characteristic, especially when I am deployed. You won't find a more family oriented organization that invest in your child than this.
