I have been a member of Ballard Health Club for over a decade and greatly enjoy the atmosphere, physical space and most of all, the wonderful class instructors. I'm
A huge fan of all of the yoga teachers, who bring their individual personalities and practice styles to the gym, with a baseline of safety and attention to the needs of students.

I highly recommend the remote classes using zoom. They make it so convenient to exercise, and fun. The yoga and Silver Sneakers teachers are amazing. I don't understand why more people don't take advantage of this feature! Membership cost is so reasonable and for remote classes you don't even have to live in Seattle!!!!

Its smaller but has all the stuff needed to get a good workout. Most importantly for me it has good Olympic squat and deadlift platforms a nice sauna and there is not a ton of people even during the busiest of times. Its clean and friendly staff. There are always fresh towels and washcloths.

My first personal training session with Larissa went very well. She clearly identified areas of improvement regarding my current mobility and gave a detailed on explanation on how to realistically meet my fitness goals. She even broke down the results from my initial in body scan and recommended ways to properly engage with my core. I will continue to recommended her to other friends that are looking for a personal trainer!

Strong positive for Katie
I appreciated how she warmed us up for a session that was more cardio than I expected (it was welcome)
My bpm is back down in normal range as I peck these notes into the box
Clear demonstrations, kindly corrections, frequent station-changes (and nice music set list - always appreciate Todd)
Would recco her for sub again

Pretty good. Lots of squat racks and cardio equipment. Gym members are reasonably good about using provided towels and alcohol spray to wipe down high touch areas used. Staff do a good job cleaning too, both superficial cleaning and periodic deep cleaning. Locker room, both men's and women's are clean and rarely if ever do you hear about theft from both what wife and I have seen and heard. I should add though that they could use a few benches just outside the sauna for cooldown and some steam cleaning of carpet at least of mens locker room because smell of sweat/mold is strong even after daily cleaning.
Can get a little tight on floor space when there's a class in the studio upstairs (they publish schedule on web so you can see if it works). Wish the treadmills went faster than 12mph and 15% incline though. Equipment they do have is usually in working order and not out of service for long. We don't do group-ex so can't speak to quality of those classes, though they are there, for both spin and yoga/HIIT/Zumba/etc.
Also, during school days (until late June), there are a few of the same young men who seem to use the men's locker room to just spend time with each other, play video games on their phones, and watch tiktok together. Odd and takes up space.

I love this health club! I was a member back in my late 20's and now am back to the area and to the gym in my late 30's. As unreasonably priced as Seattle is, somehow the member rates aren't bad and pricing is refreshingly transparent and uncomplicated. If you like classes, the plus membership is a great deal with unlimited access to varied classes and great instructors! Quality equipment with everything I would want (and way more), and a pretty low-key/not overstimulating vibe unlike some gyms (and absolutely no sales-y-ness). Welcoming and friendly staff and members, nice community feel. I love seeing all ages (teens and up) working out at the club. Ending my workout with a sauna is the cherry on top! My husband loves this gym too and frequents the weightlifting and yoga classes.

This reviewers 1 year review with context: I've been a frequent gym-goer for ~6 years now and have been to many different gyms in that time, including working at different gyms at front desk and membership support. I've frequented this gym for the last year now mostly during peak hours (5pm-7pm week days) but have also been during other random times like in the morning.
Disclaimer: I stick with weights and cardio and have not participated in classes, parking (I walk), or after hours access but my personal experience has been 10/10:
- Great bang for your buck
- Great sense of community
- The bigger gym bros are actually very nice and welcoming toward the less/non masculine-identifying members even if they look intimidating
- Very efficient use of space
- Very friendly staff
- Management is always open to suggestions
- Never gets too crazy busy, even during peak hours in January.
- Constant improvements and timely maintenance to/on equipment

Brenda is a fantastic instructor! Her classes are well-thought-out, vigorous, and always make for a great workout aimed at strengthening what matters most. There's a lot going on in her class with many unique steps to follow, yet she always manages to make every effort to ensure that her instructions are clear and that people are doing what they need to do to prevent injury. Even years before Brenda taught at the gym, I got to attend some of her classes. I seem to keep coming back to her because she knows what she's doing, and she's one of the best instructors around for strength and cardio training.

Fitness is an important part of my life - especially since being injured in an accident last year which required surgery. I feel bloated, out of shape and, like you, I live an active life and want to be active again. With a gym on every corner it's hard to decide where to work out and what amenities are important to you.
I have a Planet Fitness membership and within a short distance from my home here is a LA Fitness, OrangeTheory, Emerald City Athletics, Ballard Cross Fit and Olympic Athletic Club plus Pilates, Yoga studios and more. It's a lot to take in.
I selected Ballard Health Club and suggest you consider them too. First, its small and local which I think is important - I want to support a small local business over a national corporation or franchise.
Emerald City was rude and pricey. When I called to ask follow up questions no one returned my call. They take you pics when you come in (even before deciding if you want to be a member) and the honestly made me feel like I wasn't fit or attractive enough to be a member. Then some 4 months later they bombarded me with text messages trying to get me back in and not because they cared about me - but because (I think) they just needed some membership sales.
I liked Olympic but they were by far the busiest and most expensive - parking is tough in this part of Ballard and I saw much more fraternizing and socializing rather than working out. They got points for the pool but overall it was just not a good fit for me but not knocking OAC I think they're an okay option.
Ballard Health Club is affordable -- so let's start there. $49 a month or $59 for 24 hour access. Equipment is modern and clean, the vibe is serious without being intimidating. For some reason them being underground in a vintage building feels like walking into the Bat Cave and I like that. I needed help to get back into a program and signed up for training. First 3 sessions are $199 and I got to essentially interview and evaluate a trainer to make sure we were a good fit.
Noah C. is a newer trainer, looks like he has street creds which is about as far away from me as you can get but he was open, thoughtful and nice. I have a shoulder injury and need to stretch. I want to work hard at the beginning work but don't want to be so sore that I'd be discouraged and stop altogether. I also want results and am not familiar with a lot of exercises but don't want to feel stupid or lame because I already do feel that way being in the gym at all.
We're now in our 3rd week and while lessons aren't cheap - it beats being out of shape, not able to fit in your clothes and self-worth has VALUE.
I don't want to be a gym rat or, as a gay man, to feel out of place. Noah has been cool with me, feels like an LGBTQ ally and pushes me without making me feeling bad, stupid or that I'm a fat lump.
I like the Gym but I am there mainly because Noah's motivated me and made me feel welcome. I think you will feel welcome (Noah or not) and so I give the gym and the gym staff a big 5 stars.
Now get off your duff and get thee to Ballard Health Club!

My experience leaving this gym left a bad taste in my mouth. I moved out of the neighborhood, and contacted them the day of the next billing cycle (Nov 27) to ask to cancel my membership so I wouldn't be charged for the December membership. Even though they confirmed my membership was cancelled on the 27 and the bill for Dec didn't come through on my credit card until Nov 28, they refused to give me a refund for the December amount. They already had my final month fee that I paid upfront when I joined a year ago, which meant I was essentially paying for TWO extra months where I wasn't going to use any of the services.
The guy on the phone verbatim said "well, if you think about it, a lot of people pay for their memberships and never come into the gym at all, so just because you aren't going to use the service doesn't mean you should get a refund." The difference, of course, is I gave advance notice -- just not far enough in advance to meet the arbitrary policy.
Beyond that, I will also say that it's difficult getting into the popular classes at this gym. I was a member for a year and I joined specifically because they were one of the few gyms in the area that offered Bodypump classes. However, they only have 3 classes per week and more often than not, the weekday classes fill up instantaneously (especially Thursday's) so it ended up being harder than expected to actually go to these classes.

They donβt have all the bells and whistles (no pool) but they have enough heart that it doesnβt matter. BHC is simply the best around. I have lived in Ballard for over 2 years and have been a member of Olympic Athletic Club, Fitness 19 and BHC. Without an ounce of hesitation, BHC trounces the other 2 in nearly everything.
Ample equipment and space to work with, fantastic community driven by amazing members and staff, and lastly competitive pricing. While BHC charges an average gym rate, what you get in return is far more than what most gyms offer.
As a conclusion, if you are looking for a comfortable environment to workout in this is the place to go!

As a first time gym membership holder I was so excited to be apart of a "health club". I purchased the most expensive package so I could have 24 hour access, then was told I had to pay another $10 for the key fob. The rep was started getting rude when I pointed out it does not say that on the website and I purchased the package to have that access. He said "I can cancel your membership" as a resolution to the problem. The only amenities are a sauna and class access... they charge on every little thing. I've since been to LA fitness and planet fitness BOTH are cheaper and have many more amenities. This place is only great because the staff are friendly, and they have wash clothes instead of paper towels. I'm salty at myself for spending so much here when other places offer more for less, lesson learned.

Hidden gem of a gym. Membership is very reasonable. They have all the standard machines, several squat racks, array of dumb bells, a punching bag, and a heavy lifting room that wonβt make so much noise when you drop your weights. The parking pass is super cheap, too. My only complaint is that the pec fly machine doesnβt have a joint at the top of the arm so its angle and radius are static.

I'll come here to work out but the membership process felt scammy/misleading. You have to pay first and last month's payment up front, which basically means they get to charge everyone an extra month. It would be a lot simpler to just charge one more the at origination of membership. Representative tried to sell it as a benefit to me, but you know it really isn't.
The basic membership included sauna access on the postings but when I signed up was told sauna is not included. I'd advise the membership materials be kept up to date.

TL:DR; BHC is amazing!! You won't regret checking this place out.
(Very) long version:
I am really impressed with how much work the club has done to improve the space and get new equipment. The new olympic lifting room/deadlift room is excellent. The place also has tons of squat racks; I almost never have to wait for one.
I also have been working with Netto as a personal training client for about ~1 year now, and in that time I've gone from the kind of person who struggled to work out 1x a week to someone who consistently works out 3-4x a week and really, truly enjoys it. I've seen huge improvements in my cardio fitness and strength, and all of that is thanks to Netto -- he is insanely good at figuring out how to motivate people and couldn't be more supportive, including for folks who are right at the beginning of their fitness journey, for lack of a less dorky term :)
In addition to that, Netto has a truly impressive amount of knowledge about the human body and has been so great at adapting exercises so that they work for me. If I say, "Hey, this feels weird in this way," he comes up with several options until we find a solution that lets me work out pain-free, which is absolutely huge. I haven't had any injuries at all while working with him, which is the most important thing of all to me.
Another point, Netto is happy to let his clients decide what success looks like for them. For me, I said early on that I didn't want to set any weight-related goals, and Netto has been completely supportive and understanding of that. Instead, we track strength-based goals and aim to improve those numbers over time instead of worrying about the scale.
If you're someone who knows intellectually that working out is good for you and important for your body but has struggled to make any changes in this area, I recommend BHC and their amazing personal trainers whole-heartedly.
Also, everyone is so incredibly friendly here!! Special shout out to Ivana and Brenda for making BHC so welcoming :)

Solid equipment, friendly staff, great rates for a general-lifting gym. Not dedicated to powerlifting, Olympic lifting, etc. though has recently built some platforms to welcome those who do.

Ballard health club is the best. Good prices, no annual fees or cancellations, they have every weight machine you need. They even offer personal training as part of your membership.

Finally found my gym! It has a great variety of equipment, a sauna, not super crowded, and itβs most of the time pretty clean! Imagine that. Friendly employees that are attentive and do a good job maintaining the place. Five stars.

BHC was my favorite! No frills functional equipment, maximized use of the small space, low price, 24 hour access, and value added services like the training, nutrition, and classes. Some may find the parking situation to be less convenient than other gyms but it still has options and is very close to popular Ballard transit lines as well. I am no longer a member and I've been hard pressed to find any gym like BHC in my new living area.

I'm another (former) member who had a pretty negative experience being told my lifting was "too loud," both by a member while I was literally in the middle of a workout, and then by the owner later in an email. To the owner's credit, he refunded my membership so I could try elsewhere.
So yeah I get that deadlifting is loud in a small space. But also... it's a pretty standard exercise. And wow was it uncomfortable to be interrupted during a workout by another member extremely in my face telling me I'm doing something wrong. Be warned that although the gym has bumper plates (designed to be dropped) and an ohio deadlift bar: if you deadlift without fully controlling weight to the ground you *will* get yelled at. Apparently if you need to bail a benchpress or fail a lift in some other way you're also likely to get yelled at. Would recommend trying Olympic Athletic Club down the street if you have an interest in olympic style lifting, powerlifting, or just don't really enjoy confrontation while working out.

The Ballard Health Club is a gem- a community unto itself-- it is a place that creates friendships, works with your injuries, uses creative ways to engage and provides great training which is paid for with your membership. We have been members there for over 20 years and it's the highlight of my day (outside eating.. which makes me attend BHC regularly). Everyone who works there is interesting, helpful, sassy, an individual and very receptive to whatever comes their way. This review is updated in the time of COVID- Pat and his staff have gone out of their way to protect their members and staff, putting lower limits in the gym at a time when they could have let more folks in.
Pat's care has been exceptional and the trainers are particularly welcoming, precise in their work and have become friends over the years. This place beats out Big corporate gyms any day of the week.

This is a great gym. Has everything you might need, is rarely crowded, and best of all the employees are all nice and helpful. You can easily quit or suspend your membership anytime with no pushback whatsoever. The antithesis of a pushy gym staff.

This gym is great, BUT I wish the gym clarifies rules and regulates some nosy members.
Earlier I had an experience that while I was doing deadlift, a rando came up to me and asked me not to slam the floor... I told him I'm doing deadlift, then he said I should be careful and consider other members. I thought it was such an odd thing to point out, but I kinda got over it and moved on.
Then, I noticed uncomfortable interaction in the gym today. There was a guy doing bench press, and he seemed like trying heavy weights without a spotter. He kinda got stuck, so he tilted the bar to the right and left to remove plates and bailed out. I thought what the dude did was perfectly fine, and he actually did what's recommended for safety.
But another random guy walked up to him and aggressively demanded him to put clips on. That guy kinda shouted? the bench press guy to either put the clip on or don't do bench press. I thought he was working in this gym cause of his attitude, but apparently he works for other gym? LOL That whole conversation was so funny
Don't get me wrong, this gym is great. It's reasonably priced. Staffs are kind. Equipments are well prepared. BUT some members of the gym need to mind their own business. Or I guess the gym can clarify the rules with plates and barbells.

A wonderful, local, small business. The vibe is very friendly, all of the staff is welcoming and the gym has everything I need! Love the low cost and the free 45 min sessions with a trainer every month and a half. Also I am so grateful for the way they are have handled COVID. I have always felt safe!

This is the non-intimidating, friendly, clean, neighborhood gym you've been looking for. I've been a member for 5 or 6 years and it definitely feels like home. Here are few highlights:
Welcoming atmosphere: As a woman, who likes to lift heavy I have never ever ever felt uncomfortable to be in the free weights section or squat rack, doing my thing.
Awesome trainers: They are ALL accessible and super knowledgeable. I do small group training 2-4 times a week and each trainer brings their own expertise and makes the workout so fun. I always learn something new.
Perks: The membership price is ridiculously low. You get a free training session once a month as a member. They offer a TON of classes for streaming and in the gym. They are small enough that they LISTEN TO THEIR MEMBERS. Recommendations and suggestions are taken seriously and I've watched the club transform over the years based on the needs of their members.
Re COVID: They have done a phenomenal job in order to protect their staff and us (the members). Masks worn at all times, trainers clean all equipment, 5 people max allowed in the space, temperatures taken. Now, more than ever, I feel so safe working out at BHC.

Been a member here for almost 2 years. It's a small gym, and sometimes during the rush hours it's crowded enough where not all of the equipment is available. However, they are currently 24hrs (which is awesome for me) and going during non-peak hours is a great experience. Love the month-to-month pricing, overall a great experience.
Updated review 10/10/19: Have been here 3.5 years and have enjoyed my experience. I wanted to highlight a really positive aspect of this gym: when I went to cancel (only because I moved to another part of Seattle), the front desk agent did it immediately. No questions, no hoops, just immediate and easy cancellation. I've had to fight with other gyms to cancel before and have to say that I really appreciate the customer service of Ballard Health Club.

This is a perfect Ballard gym. Lots of machines that are almost always free. Good set of free weights. Lots of classes.
They could definitely improve things by replacing a few unused pieces of equipment. But I haven't had a hard time getting access to the equipment I need.

There are good gyms that will have the right equipment for a quality workout but then great gyms take it a step further with amazing employees and services. This is a great gym. I visited from out of town and already felt like family my first visit there. They know when to let you get your space to lock in and work-out but also know how to take care of you in ways that are unseen. As people started walking the gym I noticed the front desk employees say hello or call them out by name to greet them. It is the little things that count. The equipment is well clean and provides a space for all types of workouts. HIIT training, Power-lifting, people who prefer classes, somebody who just wants to go and maintain a healthy lifestyle, and all the above. Highly recommend. Joining is quick and easy, and parking options are available as well.

I love this club! Real people work out here. I make use of both a personal trainer (a perk that comes with every membership), who creates a workout routine specific to my needs and goals, and group classes (the list is long). It is the best investment I have made in my health!

Best club weβve belonged to. Thereβs a good ratio of machines to people and have never had a problem getting one of the type I use. Also nice having a few different tvβs to choose from. We belonged to another Ballard club, and while we liked the club, we didnβt feel like we were getting the value out of what we were paying. At BHC, Iβm very happy with the value of what we pay and whatβs available. Iβm always excited to refer people here.

I love BHC. The cost vs the equipment provided is great, and even during peak hours it's not very packed, and the wait times for equipment is minimal. Staff is great. They don't treat you like fresh meat to sell training sessions to like other gyms (24).
The 24hr access is great.
It would be nice if they threw in a couple of bench press stations though. The bench + power rack combo works just fine, but I'd rather not take up a power rack to do bench presses.

Fantastic neighborhood gym. I went to BHC for 2 years while I lived in Ballard. The facilities are clean, the members are normal/neighborhood folks, and the staff always seems genuinely happy to be there. Monthly rate is an excellent value for what you get and there's no BS fees. Wish I lived closer to keep my membership up!

Bait and switch.
I specifically purchased a week pass form this gym because it was the only local gym open 24 hours a day. Turns out this is not the case for non renewing members which is not stated in any of the information found online. I didn't have an issue staying after the front desk closed until today when "Cassy", who reports to "Pat", threw me out in the middle of my work out. At $25 dollars a week (over 50% of the monthly rate) I would seriously consider finding a different gym.
This is either complete incompetence or a calculated attempt to lure people to the gym. Either update your website to provide an accurate description of your policies or honor what you advertise.

Best and most peaceful atmosphere in town -- very much a come-as-you-are environment.
