I started attending OT Tacoma the first day it open post pandemic in 2021 and I haven’t looked back. It has become a sanctuary for me. Over the years this quaint, but efficient, gym has been a place of physical renewal and growth in my wellness journey. I am getting older in years (I am in my early fifties) but younger in spirit thanks to my coaches here at OT Tacoma. Also, a great community promoting friendships and camaraderie.

After taking class at over 50 studios in over 10 states and 3 different countries, this one takes the cake. The sense of community and really caring if you show up is there. It makes you want to come back for more as people notice you’ve upped your speed/weight lifting or even if it’s an off day, you matter. It’s a fun place to continue to improve at!

You won’t regret joining OTF Tacoma! The one fitness membership that doesn’t get old or phase out. I’ve been a member for 5+ years and still enjoy coming every week. The workouts are always new and different so you’re getting the full body without having to think about it. Lots of class times and optional challenges keep you on track and build community. No excuses.
Shout out to the awesome coaches. :)

Update1- 2 days after review and their response.
Somehow they still got through to my texts. And I’m still getting texts even though I said stop and blocked the last text number. Which just shows their response is just to save face and doesn’t have weight behind it. Harassment at this point. I have opted out and they still are texting me.

Original Review:
I wanted to look into classes here after I drop my son off at stadium high. I went online and against my better judgement, filled out their free class form. I then saw on the schedule that the only appt after 8:15am drop off was 10am. I don’t live near the school and don’t have hour and 45 min I can do nothing. So it’s not the right fit for me. That’s not my problem though, it’s been an hour and I have gotten a call, 2 texts, 2 emails…. NOPE. Spammed and blocked. Have some decency in your sales approach. You came at me too hard and I don’t like business with that much sales pressure. Let your reputation speak for you, and if you don’t have one, then maybe work on that more.

Hopefully the aggressive tactics stop after blocking, spamming.

I came here on the day of the One Mile Benchmark, while visiting Tacoma, and state of WA, for the first time.

Coach was Sam. Studio and folks were meh.

I did pretty good. I got a mile readout at 4:57, technically 5:00 if splitting hairs. The treads only go up to 12 mph, so I’d maxed out and then added 1.5-2% incline on top.

Anyway, ‘nuff said. After this gym class, I jogged a 5K roughly back to my AirBnB.

But that’s a story for another day.

I’ve been going to OrangeTheory (OT) for about a year now, so I know what I’m doing. Which indirectly means that I know what I’m doing in this review of an OT studio.

I guess the real question is, do I really know how to end this review. The answer is, no.

I went to OT Tacoma one day while on vacation, and I got a pretty respectable mile time. Then I jogged a not altogether easy 5K back afterwards.

I’m visiting from the Northern Virginia area.

So, yeah. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I have little to no idea what I’m rambling on about. But anyway, this studio was pretty dope.

Start-up was amazing! Something different, something new. Prices are pretty steep, but I understand the concept. However, if the price is that high, expectations are even higher!!! And unfortunately, they do not fully deliver. There are trainers who are more enthusiastic than others, more attentive than others. -That’s vital if that’s what others signed up for.
My main frustration is the communication at the frontlines. I like to provide people with the benefit of the doubt…but if the same issues persists? We’re beyond that! I was told 3 times that a manager would return my call about some charges that were made on my card…which by the way was mistakenly made. And if I had not been aware of it….it surely would have gone unnoticed-that’s a vulnerable feeling! The manager NEVER made any appearance or even felt the need to call. I was finally refunded the amount that was not authorized to begin with, and no one bothered to call to let me know or even apologized for the inconvenience.
This left a bad taste in my mouth and I have NO desire to go back. But I’m already charged another month so imma go 🙄. Also asked them to put the monitor on a payment plan, and I got charged the whole amount. 🤷‍♀️ still no response and no solution! Really guys?

I really enjoyed Orange Theory in Tacoma. Everyone was always welcoming and accepting. I saw all types of people and different levels of abilities and age. No one made another feel unwelcome. I have pretty significant social anxiety and while it wasn’t always easy to go because of it, the environment made it easier to overcome. I only wish there was an OT near my home in Graham. Since changing jobs I have no reason to go to downtown Tacoma so I had to say goodbye. But let me tell you, I felt amazing while being there!

So they do say the hardest step is just showing up, honestly a totally different gym type experience. I leave the place always with a feeling of achievement, but then sore the next day...Uggh exercise there is work involved.

The coaches are great, the sales team at the front desk greet people by name and honestly is one of my favorite features. The people who go are all really into it, so as a newbie I just watch in awe and just try and keep up. You pay a lot for a workout especially when half of it is just on a treadmill, but when you got a coach saying "burn that tank down, go all out" it is a nice extra push. You get a real workout and it comes with reports and data, so you get to see progress over time.

Recommend this - be warned it's a little addictive so expect that no matter what plan you buy they are gonna get you on the higher tiers eventually - but I like them.

Fun group workout atmosphere. Pumping music. No doubt, a well-designed and thought-out workout, with heart rate monitor and real-time feedback for how you are performing. But let's get real here, this is expensive stuff...especially when you realize you can down-load a high intensity play list from Spotify, alternate fast slow running in the park, and dumbell weight lifting in your home for a fraction of the cost...but that definitely requires a lot of self motivation doesn't it??

I’ve been a member for around 4 years and have seen such great improvements in my strength and endurance. I love that the classes are so personalized. You can go as fast or slow as you want, and lift as heavy or light as you are feeling up to that day. I also love the benchmark templates to see your progress over time. Overall, highly recommend! TLDR? The quick and dirty : encouraging coaches, never the same workout, convenient times, adaptable for those with joint issues.

The only reason I joined OTF was because the gym offered a strider. I’d injured my hip kickboxing and the lumpsucker of a sports medicine doctor I first saw told me to accept the limitations age was imposing on my joints and take up swimming. I told him where he could stick his cortisone shot and found a PT who hated chlorine and swimsuits as much as I do. He printed off some floor exercises from the internet and told me to find a strider.
OTF had one.
There were lots of things I didn’t like at first. Like the orange color scheme. Why orange? Numerous studies (reputable, double-blind) have shown that it’s the favorite color of sociopaths.* There is no place to sit in the waiting area and so you stand there awkwardly in your lycra leggings with your insanely long and useless arms and avoid eye contact while other, more confident people slowly take up all the space around you until you are huddled in a corner by the bathroom and have to keep telling people that no, you aren’t in line. Some coaches play songs that never end. Or maybe it’s just 15 songs that all sound exactly the same. And the aggressive optimism of the slogans on the wall can be a painful reminder of personal failure to someone whose job description is ‘trying to make people do things they don’t want to do’ (aka high school teacher). Plus, there’s the huge screen where everyone can see your name, your heart rate, splat points, and the calories you’ve burned. Why stop there? Why not my age, weight, and all the jobs I’ve lost? A scan of my aging, disintegrating joints? A close up of whatever the hell is happening to the skin under my chin?
For the love of God. Where’s the dignity?
Despite these numerous objections, I took a free class.
After that class, where I quickly crossed the pain threshold required to release a substantial flow of endorphins, I pretty much loved everything and everyone. It’s been over a year now and I love it even more. Is it the lightheadedness or the way I almost puke every single time? The coaches yell a little, which the people-pleaser in me finds strangely very invigorating. Every day is a different workout. Every month there’s a new challenge. Classes are offered from 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. And no matter how busy you are, you have an hour. You do. Don’t argue with me. Is this who you really want to be?
All of my objections have been overruled. First off, nobody has the energy to keep track of anyone else’s name and stats. And anybody who does isn’t working hard enough, so the joke’s on them. Hah. As for the orange lighting, it turns out it smooths the fine lines commonly associated with aging skin. We all look fabulous. The coaches are so kind and encouraging that I could never hold their musical shortcomings against them. Plus, once the oxygen deprivation sets in, I can hardly hear the playlist anyway.
I wasn’t in awful shape when I started so I can’t profess to jaw-dropping stats. I was hoping to lose 10 pounds and I’ve probably lost about 4. Everyone tells me muscle weighs more than fat. Whatever. I’m pretty sure in my case it’s down to a shameful lack of self-will when it comes to green tea mochi. My clothes do fit better. My students tell me I’m ‘ripped’ which is inappropriate but we are all working on boundaries. My hip is much better, which is miraculous considering that I drag my geriatric joints in to work out 4 times a week. I even do jump squats. And I like them.
Eat that Dr. Lumpsucker.
The best stat of all, the one that pleases me the most, is when before class starts, I look up at that huge screen, find my name, and see my new resting heart rate. It’s 60 bpm, down from 72 when I first started and I don’t even have to do yoga breathing to get there.
In the words of Barry White, OTF is my first, last, everything when it comes to working out.

*I made that up.

Before COVID, I got in the best shape of my life with OTF, and now I’m back working toward that goal again and aiming to beat all my personal records from before 💪

There is super clear guidance so I know exactly what to do at all times AND coaches aren’t micromanaging or making assumptions about effort, so if I need to adjust the workout for my energy level that day, I can do that. Amazing, clean, welcoming facility. Orangetheory is a complete workout involving HIIT and endurance. I can feel the difference in my body compared to other group gym classes I’ve taken. The staff is so knowledgeable and absolutely there to help you achieve your goals. Raquel and Marcus so far are my favorite coachs! I always doubt myself when it comes to progress and if I have enough time. I informed them I had 3 months until a wedding I am attending and really want to lose weight for it. They assured me that it was enough time! I felt so much better hearing that. The front desk staff is also so inviting, friendly, and peppy! The whole atmosphere is just incredibly enjoyable. It’s spoonfed fitness. All you have to do is show up and all the thinking is taken out for you. I have always struggled with getting to the gym and trying to figure out an effective workout routine for the night so this is super convenient! The coach’s also will always repeat themselves over the microphone so you won’t have to ask again and miss time doing it or try to look at others to figure it out. There are also tv screens showing what is going on as far as the weight room goes and shows little moving characters of how to properly do the weighted exercise.

I love that my workout feels like I am part of a community. I no longer feel like I am just going to the gym. It is much more of an activity and I love the surprise of seeing what is in store for the days workout. Before OTF I was working out regularly and eating well, but I was not seeing any changes in my body. I joined Orangetheory because I wanted to feel stronger and more capable, but in the process I lost almost 80 lbs. I never thought I would feel more comfortable working out in a group than I do by myself, but I love being around people that I know always have my back and can help me when I don't know what I'm doing. OTF was the biggest life change that I've made in a LONG TIME, and that might sound crazy, but it really has an impact on many other aspects of my life. Take a class with coach Raquel!!

Because the exercises are done in short burst intervals, it's easier to stay present and give 90-100% for the entire hour. Also, I almost NEVER used to do weight training, and I can feel how much I've needed it (needing to use 5 lbs and 8 lbs for most of the weight room exercises....)

Doing 1/2 the class on the treadmill and 1/2 the class in the weight room also makes it easier to stay in flow, and stay focused, so the hour really seems to go by quickly.

I love the energy of the music, how I push myself with other people sharing the workout, and the encouragement of the instructors (I feel like I am working out with a personal trainer every time).

I really love Orange Theory and would recommend it to anyone looking to take their fitness more seriously without making a huge time commitment to it.

The workout incorporated everything within one class! Cardio and weights! I love the pace that keeps you moving. I recently took on a personal trainer to get the exact same exercises we did in the class. I have only taken one class but I know I will see the results I am looking for.

I hate working out. Can you relate? Orange Theory in Tacoma is the only time I've tried a workout and my comment after was "I didn't hate it!" I've now been going consistently for over a year. It's literally the only workout/gym plan I've stuck with. The coaches and staff are great. Gotta include a shout out to Will, who is super upbeat and has the best playlist! I am so happy this place found a home in my neighborhood!

Love this place. Worth the price. Otherwise, I'd be paying for a gym membership I never use. Really, it's like having a personal trainer, so if you compare the price that way, then it's more than reasonable! I'm in my thirties and haven't worked out since high school. Now I love doing it. This place is great for everyone at any level.

🧡🧡🧡 OTF workouts! I go 5-6 days a week. The coaches and staff are extremely helpful and the community is amazing. They change up the workouts to focus on endurance, strength, and power so you’re never doing the same workout 2 days in a row.

I wasted way too many years being scared of the idea of Orangetheory. The hype is real, Orangetheory is a full body and heart, comprehensive workout. The best part is, the trainers are motivating, encouraging, and not drill-sargeanty. The personnel at the front desk are always smiling and accommodating. I encourage anyone and everyone to give it a shot, but beware you WILL fall in love. #teamtacoma

OTF has been great! I’ve tried many times to get back into regular, challenging workouts, but hurt myself time and time again. OrangeTheory has the structure to make me WORK, but not destroy my knees and ankles. I’m in love!

I’ve been a member at Orangetheory since it opened. The classes are great. They’re varied every time and are never boring. Most of the coaches are very enthusiastic and push you to your limits, which is awesome! My fitness level has dramatically improved since I’ve been going to OTF, and I’ve gotten faster on the treadmill.

That being said, there are a few negatives. The workout area for the weights is small. If your neighbor(s) is/are inconsiderate or not paying attention, it can be frustrating to find the area in which you can workout. Most importantly, it seems to be a place that best serves people who have a background in exercising. The coaches, with a few exceptions, don’t seem to pay a ton of attention to people’s form. Sometimes you can see people doing exercises in a manner that is obviously incorrect and could potentially hurt them, and that is not addressed with any sort of regularity. I understand there can be a lot of people in class, but that seems important. Finally, there are two showers. This makes going to morning classes tough, as they can range in size from 26-39 people, and I imagine more than two people want to shower. It’s a little surprising that a gym that can accommodate that many people has such an inadequate shower situation.

I have been going to Orange Theory for 5 months, going on 6. Every class has been different even though we are utilizing the same equipment. I have taken classes with 5 different coaches and enjoy them all. As someone who’s held onto gym memberships for months on end doing mediocre workouts OT makes it easy having a coach tell you what to do. 60 mins of hard work and by the end I can’t believe I finished that.

Orangetheory Tacoma is my favorite place in Tacoma. The people, the members, the workouts, it’s more than a gym, it’s such a place of happiness and inspiration. I have met some of my favorite people in the world here, it’s truly the best community. I have seen such dramatic results since I started last May. Things I never thought I’d do when it comes to running goals or weight lifting goals, they are second nature now. Just do a free class, you have nothing to lose by trying it once. I promise you’ll fall in love.

I was super skeptical when I signed up for Orange Theory, and signed up after hearing about Orange Theory from a friend. My partner was skeptical as well, but we signed up together. I have to say it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Not only did I lose a ton of weight that I gained while working and studying, but the community that is built while working out makes it fun and energizing. This studio is for anyone -- all people. It's one of those places where you wake up early in the morning and are excited to see the crew and work out each morning. The staff is encouraging, motivating, and positive. Tacoma OT is the best!

I like everything about an Orangetheory workout from the treadmill to the rower to the weight room. Every workout is unique in its own way and every day is different. I get bored easily doing one thing for too long and that is NOT the case at Orangetheory with all the different exercises movements and switching throughout the class. I have grown to love every kind of day, endurance (I never liked to run before Orangetheory), strength, & power. Orangetheory workouts force me out of my comfort zones and make me push myself to do things I never imagined I’d be doing. Not only is the workout it’s self great, it’s the community/ family at Orangetheory that keeps me coming back every day. The coaches and other members make Orangetheory so enjoyable.

We have only went to our first class and absolutely love it so far!
Me and Lando signed up for monthly memberships and are already signed up for our next class this Wednesday! From the front desk staff to the amazing coach (Will) we had a blast working our tails off in the studio! We were walked through the process, shown how and when to do the different parts of the workout, and can't wait till our next class! We definitely felt like a home like welcoming environment with no judging or anything of the sort! We felt right at home!
Also each exercise was at your own pace and then you find your maxes or "All Out" pace. We loved that we found our kin and max and we're pushed past our comfortable limits by the coach in a very appeasing way not pushy or forceful but encouraging!
I definitely recommend coming here and at least giving it a try even if you don't sign up it will give you something to talk about at the next bbq or friends night!

Front desk people are poorly trained. Several peoples heart monitors are not working. Could not answer questions regarding membership and did not know anything about the app on the phone..The most annoying thing was after we drove a half hour to get there and they had sent a message we got in we sat there another 15 minutes just to be told the class was full.

This workout is the best! I have never used a gym- too intimidating and how would I know I was doing what I needed? But at OT, I don’t have to worry about that. The coaches tell you what to do, your heart monitor info tells you how hard you are working and the staff are encouraging and fabulous.

Friendly staff that greets you by name at the door, motivating coaches and challenging workouts. I never leave dissatisfied! I’m at a place in life where I don’t have a lot of time in the week to workout and when I do it’s hard to find the motivation because work is exhausting. Paying for OTF twice per week ensures I get at least two hours of tough physical activity in during troughout the week. Having a membership has been more than worth it.
