If you’re looking for a masterclass in how not to run a business, Seattle Athletic Club Downtown delivers. The staff - short-handed, out of sync - found time to “tag-team” a prospective member instead of providing basic customer service. Their treatment showed zero respect for disabilities and selective attention depending on who walks through the door. Don’t waste your time here; there are far better clubs in Seattle (Pro Club, Ballard are AMAZING.) that understand how to treat people, maintain clean updated facilities, and actually invest in long-term customer relationships. For a fitness club, they’re remarkably out of shape where it matters most.

Was from out of town. Talked to someone earlier in the day about taking a Body pump class when i arrived Lisa the Housekeeping Manager made the call to not allow me in. Membership had left early for whatever reasons and couldn’t help me out. Shitty service and communication.

As someone who just joined SAC a few months ago, I need to push back on reviews suggesting the contract is deceptive or manipulative. The contract is easy to understand, and we had ample time to ask multiple clarifying questions in person while signing up. There is no deception or manipulation at any stage, so please take the time to read the contract and ask questions before signing anything. Although I don't love every single aspect of the contract, just imagine how high their expenses are in Pike Place Market. This is a local, small business, not a massive conglomerate. If you don't like the contract, don't sign.

With that said, I love this gym! There are so many pathways to better health, classes, squash, an excellent selection of free weights and weight machines, and lots of choices for cardio including unique ones like a rope trainer, a tread wall, and multiple treadmills and ellipticals. The saline pool is amazing, always at the perfect temp, and only 4.5 feet deep so most people will find it easy to stand if you need a break or feel uncertain about swimming. The locker rooms have saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs, and they even have massage therapists and trainers on site.

They do a lot of maintenance and they are always improving their offerings. It's clear that they truly care. It's also quite a large gym, very impressive given the location, so there is usually plenty of space. Staff are friendly and helpful, and other attendees are friendly too. It feels like a nice safe space with a diverse community of regular people. It's the best gym I've ever been a member of. I also really like that they have a whole art gallery and participate in the local art community. SAC is a positive force in the community and it's really worth considering if you are looking for an unpretentious gym.

I’ve been a member of this gym for two years and have mostly enjoyed my experience. However, the facility is in serious need of updates—the infrastructure feels stuck in the 80s, and the locker room is painted a dark "pee" like color that doesn’t give off a clean or modern vibe.

More importantly, the customer service has been disappointing. I have been charger a recurring locker-fee, even though I turned in my locker key and completed the paperwork, yet I continued to be charged a recurring locker fee. When I raised the issue with Natasha, the Membership Director, she placed the blame on me and insisted I pay for a service I wasn’t receiving.

This lack of accountability and unwillingness to help is unacceptable. Unfortunately, because of this experience, I’ll be cancelling my membership.

I hate when gyms are weird about day passes. I’ll literally pay $50 a day to use the gym. They don’t.

I was a regular member at SAC for over a year and generally enjoyed the facility. However, the experience at the end of my membership was deeply disappointing.

I submitted a 30-day cancellation notice in good faith on July 22, expecting my membership to end at the end of July. I was then charged a prorated fee for August (through 8/22)—something that was never explained in the contract or at sign-up, and not clearly disclosed in any communication prior. When I pushed back, the membership and leadership teams insisted on enforcing the fee without acknowledging the lack of transparency. They even told me I was lucky not to be charged the full month instead.

The rigidness of how this was handled, especially after being a loyal, low-maintenance member.. was frustrating. Instead of owning the ambiguity and offering a goodwill resolution, they leaned on technicalities and refused to budge.

I was a member for the last 21 years at Downtown and Northgate. Unfortunately, the guest services and membership quality have been in decline over the past few years. First, the parking was eliminated, then the memberships were limited, and prices went up. I called to see if a day pass was available. They answered "no way"

Weirdly exploitative experience tarnishing otherwise great gym. I pay the rather steep $155/month membership just to play basketball here because they're the only indoor basketball court in the downtown area. They just announced renovations to their indoor basketball court for 2-3 months from now through October.

Here's where it gets weird. You'd think that since we can't use the court anymore because they initiated renovations on a court that was totally fine, they could put a free pause on our memberships for the period. But no, in the fine print of the contract, "The Club will not reduce or suspend dues during the time when the facilities are not available."

So my options are to
1) Be billed $50 per month to freeze my membership (1/3rd of the regular monthly fee) to NOT use the gym, or
2) Give 30 days notice of cancellation, pay another $155 for the 30 days, and then pay $250+ to rejoin when the court is done with renovations.

Even if it's in the fine print, this doesn't feel right on principle. It's not a couple day repair. It's bleeding your members for months while you do a voluntary renovations. I actually really liked this gym, the front desk is always very helpful and welcoming. I hate that SAC is providing negative value to their basketball members just to make a few hundred dollars while doing a renovation we didn't ask for.

Previously had some issues with this facility, but after a surprising follow-up with the SAC General Manager, my experience here has improved tremendously. It was nice to know that they listen to their members and follow through with action items after discussion. Their acknowledgement and improved transparency helps make members at SAC feel safe and heard. Lets hope they continue this continuous improvement process!

Seattle Athletic Club (Downtown) has been transformative for me. I joined in August 2022 weighing 294 pounds, and as of December 2024, I'm down to 230 pounds - a journey that wouldn't have been possible without this gym's supportive environment.

What sets SAC apart is its genuinely inclusive atmosphere. Unlike many modern gyms that feel intimidating, SAC welcomes everyone - from young professionals maintaining their fitness to seniors doing their daily cardio, from fitness enthusiasts to people like me who started their weight loss journey here. This diversity isn't just marketing; it's evident in the daily crowd and creates a comfortable atmosphere for everyone.

The facilities and equipment are excellent, but what truly makes this place special is the people. The front desk staff are consistently friendly and engaging. I started working with Will Paton as a personal trainer, and it was one of the best decisions I made. Will, like all the trainers here (Emily, Becky, Eli, Jodi, Jacob), creates a completely non-judgmental environment. I saw consistent progress - dropping to 265 by November 2022, then to 242 by July 2023, and continuing my journey to where I am now.

If you're hesitant about personal training like I initially was, give it a try. The trainers here are worth the investment and can make a real difference in achieving your goals.

What I particularly appreciate is that it's not trying to be a trendy gym with blasting EDM music or an intimidating "gym-bro" culture. Instead, it focuses on being a reliable, professional facility where you can consistently work on your fitness goals, whether they're modest or ambitious. Through various phases of my journey - including winter plateaus and summer breakthroughs - the gym has remained a constant, supportive presence.

It says something about how addictive this gym becomes when my biggest 'complaint' is feeling lost during their one-week maintenance closure in August - I actually miss going to the gym during that break! That's how integral SAC has become to my daily routine.

If you're serious about changing your life, whether it's losing weight like I did or pursuing other fitness goals, SAC Downtown provides both the facilities and the supportive community you need. The trainers here don't just help with workouts; they become partners in your fitness journey.

Note: There are more things at SAC than just strength training, like a swimming pool, squash courts, basketball court etc. I am not the best person to give an overview of the facilities - you should contact the staff for this.

Not for out of town guests looking for a place to workout for a few days or a few weeks. They said they offered a week "membership" but wouldn't say how much. They said the membership office had to do share that, but they don't open until 10:30 so if you want to workout before work, you're out of luck. Made no sense.

I have been a member at the Seattle Athletic Club for about 2 years and here is my much overdue glowing review! The entire staff is so kind and friendly, they do an excellent job at creating an encouraging and comfortable community. Going above and beyond by coordinating motivating challenges, offering events ranging from self defense seminars to holiday parties and so much more! I initially joined solely for the salt water pool and for the spa amenities, which are fantastic. Since then I have stepped out of my comfort zone and tried most of the group fitness classes, all of which were great! They really have an amazing crew of instructors who are fun, helpful and teach to all levels. I could ramble on and on about how much I love SAC, so come check it out for yourself!

My partner and I joined two months ago, and the Seattle Athletic Club (SAC) has exceeded my expectations in every possible way. As someone who has explored numerous gyms, I can confidently say that this place stands out for its community atmosphere, cleanly & diverse facilities, and kind staff.

The gym is always clean, and the equipment is well-maintained and up to date. There’s a wide variety of classes, amenities and a diverse collection of machines and free weights. The locker rooms are spacious, clean, and equipped with all the necessary amenities, making the post-workout experience just as pleasant as the workout itself.

SAC feels like community dedicated to health, wellness, and positivity. I couldn’t be happier with my experience here and hope to be a member for many, many years to come.

This is a nice gym with good staff and decent equipment. Minus 2 stars for the overindexing on squash courts. It's ridiculous the sheet amount of square footage dedicated to roid rage ping pong. Probably 1/2 of the total usable "gym space" is dedicated to squash. My suggestion: don't dedicate 1/2 of the total usable gym space to squash.

Great location and amenities! I had a great time as a member of this gym; often taking advantage of the salt water pool and indoor basketball court.

The equipment here has definitely seen better days and I eventually transitioned to another gym since that was more important in my book.

The crowd here definitely caters more towards the older crowd, which was not ideal for me. However, If you’re looking for a place with many amenities and a great staff, look no further… I couldn’t recommend this place and its staff anymore if lifting isn’t your top priority.

I am very disappointed with this gym. When I joined, they made me sign some papers but didn't tell me that I was agreeing to a long-term contract. They said the papers were just for safety reasons. Because of this, I thought I could stop going to the gym and stop paying without any issues. But, after a few months of not going, they sent a bill to a collections agency, which hurt my credit score.

It's important for people to know that this gym makes you sign a contract that's hard to get out of. They don't make it clear how to cancel, and it seems like they try to make it as difficult as possible to keep taking your money.

I won't be going back and I advise others to be very careful before signing anything with them.

it's been 1 week, so far it's ok. Ofc it could always be better with better furniture, better lockers, better atmosphere, better whatever but it does the job, it has a ton of various cardio equipment, lots of weights, various classes and can't beat the location. I do think the enrollment fee is a scam especially given how outdated this place is but i didn't have a choice. The pool is outdated and short in length [20 yards] but it is the only one available in this area so i appreciate it. Staff so far has been nice.

Always loved sports and excercise so was happy to find this place at the recommendation of family. Signed up, was super enthused to work out and have a place other than work or home. Had three days of great workouts in before reality struck unfortunately.Three days later they were ready to throw me out in front of everyone because the janitor didn’t recognize me and the beefy guy that signed me up couldn’t remember me and had me give him my full information until he realized he messed up. Got some half answers from other employees, plain and simple they singled me out because I didn’t match their “ideal” clientele. Guess that won’t be problem since I got a refund and got out of there.

Just a heads up, but as of January 2023 this gym is still requiring proof of vaccination. Politics aside, this is just informational for any visitors wanting to attend.

I love SAC Downtown! It has exactly what I need regardless of my specific workout. For me this includes – full weightlifting equipment (squat racks always available, ancillary equipment like decline benches, KBs and DBs), concept2 ergs and ski ergs, indoor track, plentiful ellipticals and treadmills, battle ropes, 20-yard pool, locker room with amenities including towels, and (hopefully again soon!) a kids club for my kiddos. I also take advantage of private swim lessons for the kids (additional fee).

They have remained open during COVID with a new reservation system to keep from getting crowded and ongoing cleaning, and masks and vaccine requirements as mandated. In non-COVID times and for additional fees, I can get in a workout while my kids hang out in Kids Club, and bring guests. Very convenient location from Amazon buildings near the Spheres – I change in those locker rooms and run over (.6 miles) so can go whenever I can squeeze into the work day.

I have nothing but good things to say about this club. It has its quirks and the facility is not glamorous, but it will have exactly what you need and you’ll never not be able to get on the equipment.

TLDR:
- Personal training at SAC has changed my quality of life
- SACdt has everything: Pool, squash courts, indoor track, mini climbing machine, basketball, body-composition machines, personal trainers, water aerobics, massages, boxing room---it is the most full-service gym I have ever been to.
- It's located right in Pike Place Market.
- COVID safe: Everything is cleaned each hour; Everyone is wearing masks; They did something cool to the HVAC system (no pun intended).

---------------------------------

The Long Version (written after the gym over a few days):
It's 10:15am and I just left my personal training session with Lisa at Seattle Athletic Club in downtown Seattle (SACdt)...and I feel so ENERGIZED! What do I mean by energized? You know the term "runner's high" that no one except runners seems to know---well, I am fairly certain this is what they mean (or as close as I'll ever get to it, because I am no runner).

I am in my mid-thirties with a disability that has me in chronic pain, but I feel so much better on days I work out that it has become an absolute must for me to be at the SACdt. My mood is better, I'm getting strong, and my health is improving, but most importantly, I just feel my best on days I work out.

1.5 years ago, I was in a wheelchair after major hip/back surgeries and weak as a baby, but through hard work, personal training, water aerobics, and dedication, I am walking, in the gym 5-6 times a week, and STRONG.

COVID safety: This is going to sound cheesy, but it's true: I feel safer at the gym than I do at the doctor's office based on how well SACdt is keeping it clean. From the start, SACdt implemented thorough rules for keeping members safe at the gym, but their cleaning team is keeping it sterilized! They have an app to pick specific times to come in, there are limitations to five people per room in each session, in-between sessions their house-cleaning team cleans every machine and apparatus, they are checking temps at the front desk, and everyone is wearing masks.

EDIT: I had to take three weeks off the gym due to injury, and today (my first day back) has me feeling rejuvenated and motivated again. I didn’t realize how down I was getting not being there the past few weeks.

The coaching was outstanding, and Omar obtained excellent skills that allowed him to play as a starter for the George Washington University Varsity squash team for 4 years! Robert goes to the club about 6 days a week and has been able to keep fit and healthy. He loves the staff, who are very helpful and supportive, as well as the variety of activities that are both fun and rewarding, and promote his excellent health and mental frame of mind! He always talks in superlatives when the subject of the Seattle Athletic comes up in conversations. He plan to be member for the rest of his life!

I am extremely grateful to the Seattle Atheletic Club for the excellent quality and service they provide to it's members. I consider what they offer as an improtant part of the lifestyle that I wish to maintain where optimal health is of prime importance. For myself and others, SAC has been a God send during these challenging times when we need to maintain our active and vibrant lifestyle. Without SAC, the COVID_19 lockdown while being a senor member and former professional athelete recovering from double knee surgery would have been much more difficult to healing with the resulting inactivtiy. I am so pleased to be back in balance with my health and wellness, as it continues to offer me wonderful resources for optimal health. They follow the strictest Covid guidelines and is kept sanitize, clean and welcoming by a most friendly and professional staff and personnel. .I have decades of experience and participation in various Clubs and find it to be the best of the best.. .

I have been a member of SAC since 1995. During that time I've been a platinum member and have utilized every service and facility the club offers. Depending on how my day was and what I am my mood is I can drop in and use the Cardio room, vast Weight Room, Squash Courts, Lap Pool or pick-up Basketball. Sometimes it may just be a massage from one the many capable massage therapists’ and a visit to the steam room or sauna, but always ending my workout with a relaxing visit to the jacuzzi.

The club offers a wide variety of personal trainers with years of experience between them and all the staff from the front desk to housekeeping are always friendly and helpful. More than anything there is a great sense of community that I have not experienced at any other club.

This club has really been an important part of my life and I have made many acquaintances and great friends thru my daily workouts and club functions. An added benefit is the great location at the foot of Pike Market and easy access to the waterfront. Lots of outstanding restaurants in the neighborhood or places to meet for happy hour.

This club really has it all, and more! I am certain it will exceed your expectations

The SAC downtown is the best club that we've ever belonged to. Wonderful staff, who create a real community. At the same time, if you just want to come in, work out and go, that works, too. We also especially appreciate that we can work out in peace, with no blaring piped-in music. Many free classes available as part of membership, and individual sessions with trainers are available as well. We couldn't recommend the SAC more highly.

Our family loves SAC Downtown! What do we love? So many options -- weights, swimming/swim team, basketball, indoor track, training, yoga classes, barre classes, ab classes, pilates classes, cycling, sauna, steam room. The staff is always friendly and helpful and it always feels clean although it is an aging facility. Great community! We've not yet taken advantage of any of the additional community opportunities outside of the club but hope to someday.

Love working out here. Gym is “ old school “ and unpretentious... but amenities and the staff are great. So clean !!! ... so well stocked!!! .... every thing is so well thought out !!!:-) The gym is spread out into different rooms so you concentrate on your workout ,- never have I had to wait for a machine. There is a “ living room “ and a cafe with plenty of seating, so you will never find people just laying around taking up space ( Iv was a member of LA fitnesses and this club is worlds apart ) .... it’s like a little home away from home

4 on 4 mid-day pick-up basketball is popular and competitive, with a team or two waiting MWF. I have done a few of the workout classes, and the instructors have been up-peat and fun. I have found the staff to be generally pleasant and the facilities satisfactory over the last year.

Seattle Athletic Club is a great place to train and elevate your game. The staff is super friendly, the instructors are great, the group classes really fun and motivating and the club truly supports their members with one-to-one sessions, advices, etc... Plus they have all the facilities (from an indoor running track to a 20-yards pool), right in the city center. I can only recommend this place!

I fell in love with SAC first time coming here—it has a basketball court and spa which is everything I need. The staff also magically recognizes everyone so it feels more homely than those gyms that you have to scan your card every time. Would recommend!

They must have done a complete revamp of their approach to customer service because my experience with this club has been nothing short of awesome from the jump. Every single person on staff I've interacted with is friendly and helpful and not at all pretentious. I never feel out of place or unwelcome; in fact, they know me by name already and it's barely been a month. The variety of services they offer is great, the facilities are great, but I think my personal favorite I'd have to say: the smoothies. Haha. They lowkey (or maybe highkey) changed my life!

Compared to a lot of athletic clubs in Seattle, it is an amazing place to work out. Weight room, good sized locker rooms, cardio rooms, etc. I have just began going here last week and I will be back!

Clean club, equipment isn’t the newest, but most everything works and is in good shape. The weight room isn’t packed. I’ve never had to wait for a machine to open up. Small details count - house keeping keeps the locker rooms clean and towels and toiletries stocked. Dry sauna, steam room and whirlpool are nice. Workouts on the Pilates equipment is extra money, but they offer a handful of mat Pilates classes. I don’t play squash, but it’s fun to watch while coming and going. Membership has been very responsive via email. Prices are steep, but they don’t charge an annual fee like some gyms (looking at you, PNW Fitness). It’s a pain to get to if you’re not already downtown, but if you live or work close by, it’s totally worth it.

Wow, how far this place has fallen. It is SERIOUS disrepair. The women's locker room is filthy and the staff is ill-prepared to hear anything, let a alone fix anything. Machines remain broken for long periods of time

The staff I spoke with say the manager, Rob, and the operations woman, Sam, rule by terror - bring up an issue and you are as likely to be fired as anything else. The sad part was this used to be a good place, with an engaged, able staff.

I was in Seattle for a week and this gym provided the perfect space for regular workouts. Equipment is plentiful and the weights area was never too crowded (a big advantage over my gym at home!). The staff were able to organise a satisfying short-term membership deal for my girl and me which was much appreciated. The class schedule is also appealing, though we didn't attempt any during our stay.

Lovely place, highly recommend! It is old gym, but my husband and I love this Gym. There are many reasons why we love this gym so much; Staff and trainers are awesome, good events which enhance health and good family bonding, no shallow people who come to gym which annoy others, but solid good people who care about health, and wonderful day care center. The members LOVE this gym and stay long~ time. We are leaving because of moving out from Seattle, but I will surely miss this gym very much! 10 out of 10!
