I joined the Thanksgiving Day practice at the studio and truly enjoyed Richard’s instruction. Iyengar yoga’s precision and use of props helped me experience each stretch more deeply, even as someone with a lot of tightness. Although I’ve practiced yoga at different studios for many years, this was the first time I felt an intense side stretch with both comfort and depth—thanks to the oversized yoga block. I didn’t want to leave the pose because it felt so supported and effective.

I also had the chance to practice with the yoga wall and ropes, with kind guidance from experienced students in the class. It made my Thanksgiving Day feel extra special.

Even if you don’t live near the Seattle Ravenna area where the studio is located and can’t commit to a weekly class, I still highly recommend joining the Thanksgiving Day practice.

I’m looking forward to learning more Iyengar yoga!

I have been taking classes with Richard for almost 7+ years. He is exact, understands Iyengar yoga in/out - having learnt from BKS Iyengar first hand. If you want to learn the real Iyengar hatha yoga as taught by Guruji BKS Iyengar, this is the place to learn from. It feels like I am in india Pune studio learning authentic yoga. He expects sincere effort from the student, just like Guruji. He demonstrates all the poses and shows the right alignment one should maintain in each pose. I enjoy everytime I am in the class and grown so much in my yoga poses. Thank you Richard.

Richard is the best teacher! He is strict but funny. I appreciate the strict adherence to the correct yoga postures, as it cured my pain and helped my energy in incredible amounts. I had brain cancer surgery in 2021 and Iyengar yoga has helped tremendously on my healing path. Igengar yoga is truly for everyone, no matter how old or stiff or sick you are. As long as you are ready to be challenged!

Richard doesn't spend much time on computers, and the website is hard to navigate. I recommend just signing up for a class and showing up early. If it's too confusing to register online, just show up early to the class you want to take, and chat in person.

I have been taking Iyengar yoga classes with Richard for about a year now. Richard brings a wealth of knowledge and decades of experience in Iyengar yoga. His classes are rooted in authenticity and tradition, making them an excellent choice for anyone serious about learning genuine yoga. His approach is straightforward and focused on proper technique, helping students master each pose with precision. Richard is very thorough with his instructions regarding the form and alignment. Just simple changes make a huge difference. I am so glad to have found Richard as my guru. I can’t say it enough; it is the best yoga class that I have attended.

Richard is the best yoga teacher I've ever had. He's definitely not for everyone but for those who want to learn how to align their body without the Americanized "foo-foo yoga", as Richard calls it, its such a hidden gem. Students must take classes in a course method, ensuring you know how to do well everything you're doing. Your name and body type /injuries are immediately remembered and addressed. Classes are engaging and giving the students the chance to become self sufficient, but you'll never want to stop coming once you're in.

Richard is extremely knowledgeable. He has many, many years of experience, and visits the Iengar institute in India frequently. If you are looking for authentic yoga, this is the place to go. If you are looking for a touchy-feely yoga experience, this is not the place for you. Richard teaches in a straightforward, no nonsense style. He helps everyone in the class to master a pose correctly. He is the best yoga instructor that I have experienced.

My wife was excited to go to this class. The instructor was dismissive insisting she was fearful when she said she would rather not perform a specific stretch My wife has had foot problems and this stretch has caused problems before. Regardless, he was insistent and goaded her into performing the stretch, at one point treating her like a child and telling everyone to ease up except her and insisting that her "fear" was in her head. I saw she was physically uncomfortable after that point and decided we should leave early. I am sure he is competent but I was not willing to invite that behavior into our lives.

I received your response. I do understand you have a perception of the way this played out but as a third party observer might I suggest your persistence for someone to do something they did not wish to do AFTER they tried your way (she did attempt to do it your way) may have been a bit much. I hope you all the best in your future growth as a person.

I underwent teacher training under Richard in 2020. It was a one-year program that started late. Upon completing the program, Richard informed us that he would not issue the certificate immediately and would provide additional requirements in the Fall, which he never did. Despite visiting the studio multiple times, he never provided any information. I sent multiple follow-up emails, but he never responded. I invested a significant amount of time and effort, and it was an unpleasant experience not to receive the certificate, especially without any explanation for his decision.

I'm so glad I found authentic iyengar yoga and a teacher like Richard. Richard has helped me practice through several joint and muscular issues.

Im thankful that I'm able to do yoga despite body limitations; thanks to Richard's thorough instructions on alignment and his emphasis on the basics.

I have only heard positive things about the Center for Yoga of Seattle and Richard Schachtel. Sadly I can't reach out to him as he does not answer my request on Twitter (the only social media platform I use). It would be nice if You would answer my follow request (@sonnenbrandi) so I can test out the Yoga sessions. Have a nice day!

I chose the Center for Yoga and Richard Schachtel for my very first 200 hr yoga teacher certification, and I couldn't be happier with my choice! As a dedicated student of yoga for eight years, my desire for an experienced, wise and senior teacher in an alignment-based practice drove my decision.
Richard is extremely knowledgeable, and he keeps control of his classes so that you are always learning--about every body type, every prop, and you're encouraged to explore what different modifications and props do for you.
I've left this training prepared to begin working with ANY type of body and ANY level of ability, which was my goal.
However, I've also left this training having discovered such an invaluable resource and teacher in Richard that I'm committed to continuing to study with him both to further my own practice and to also continually deepen my understanding of yoga in the Iyengar tradition.
I have chosen to teach yoga to others and share the joy of this self-healing practice, and I'm incredibly grateful to be learning so much from Richard that I can then pass on to my students.

The best yoga studio in Seattle, bar none. Richard is incredibly knowledgable and a no-nonsense teacher. If you want to learn traditional yoga as it used to be taught by the masters, visit this studio. You'll be in a highly focused class. I took a year long course with Richard, and am planning to sign up for another one!

This place is terrific. For those who want to experience authentic and traditional yoga taught in the Iyengar style, this is the place that will give you the best. The teachers are amazing, the attention to each student, and their alignment and technique is what makes this place stand out compared to the standard yoga class. I have been going here for more a year and can't imagine going anywhere else.
