I have been training with Uplift Fitness for the past 2.5 years, and I can genuinely say I am SO happy to have found them. I started personal training as someone who had never really worked out in a gym before to now feeling confident working out on my own and feeling strong and empowered! They have truly changed my life for the better.
Rena is the absolute best trainer - I feel so taken care of by her as a coach. She is incredibly well-educated and thoughtful in her programming to maximize health and longevity benefits and she truly cares about her people. She always prioritizes proper technique to avoid injury and emphasizes feeling good in your body. I also appreciate that she takes a holistic approach to coaching, checking in on things like sleep and stress and how that can impact our energy.
I now feel confident in knowing I have been taught good form and lifting foundations like how to properly brace and move through big compound lifts. Rena also coached me through getting over lingering knee pain and keeping it at bay.
Rena is such a gem that I chose to maintain coaching with her online after moving away from Seattle. I am so happy to have her by my side as I continue with my weight lifting journey!

I've been training with Uplift for about 2.5 years. Rena does an amazing job working with me every week and tailoring the program to what I need. Dealing with a broken foot, sore shoulder, or any other ailment...easy. Adjusting to emphasize back or arms, she's flexible and adaptable...but will also push you to get stronger as you need it.
I've had great results and gotten so much stronger working with her. But beyond that, she and everyone who work at Uplift are just good. Training sessions are a hell of a lot of fun every time and it turns out that everything is better with awesome people. I can't recommend Uplift strongly enough!

I've been working out with Rena of Uplift Fitness for a year and half. I do in-person coaching (1 hour) once a week, then work out on my own 2 days a week with a plan she creates for me monthly. I totally recommend reaching out to her and Uplift Fitness if you're seeking out a trainer, especially if you work out at Rain City Fit gym.
Over this time, I've learned so much when training under Rena. She is extremely knowledgeable and a great teacher. I've had trainers in the past, but I've never stuck around with one as long as I did with her. I feel that I just keep on learning, and she's just so fun to spend time and chat with.
She's able to answer why we may be doing an exercise, what muscles it targets, and PROPER FORM & BREATHING. I can't stress that last point enough. I've had trainers in the past that taught me everything wrong, this explains why I had body pains in the past and couldn't push myself hard enough. However, Rena has been a blessing in ensuring that I'm tackling exercises in a safe and attentive way.
Even during covid-times, she was able to create an at-home plan when the gym was closed. This helped me keep motivated and not regress too far with my in-gym progress. These have been super tricky times and she has been extremely accommodating with every curveball that's been thrown at us.
After all this time training with Rena, I can confidently say that I'm stronger and more knowledgable than I've ever been. I am still working out with her now, because I continue to learn something new and refine my capabilities each week.
Update (September 2025):
It's been 4 years since my original review, so I want to provide an update since I've continued working out with Rena for a total of 6 years and it has only gotten better.
She continues to find ways to refine my form in the smallest of tweaks that have caused me to surpass my prior strength records. It's surreal re-reading my initial review, then knowing where I am now. Rena & Uplift Fitness have truly changed my life and I still stand by everything I originally said.
I have since gotten into powerlifting and am an avid weight lifter. I'm no longer wanting to learn how to be a lifter, instead I am one. She teaches, motivates, and supports me with my training goals and multiple lifting meets I participate in. I feel so knowledgeable these days and confident around the gym because of what Rena and Uplift Fitness have bestowed upon me.
Uplift Fitness invests in their clients and I am thankful to still be training with them.

I’ve been working out with Rena for almost seven years now. I’ve had mysterious hip and leg pain for years. I’ve seen every medical profession under the sun, multiple PTs, chiropractors, acupuncturists, etc., and none have been able to help. Rena has stuck with me through the whole thing, and continued working tirelessly to find a workout regimen that works for me. She’s helped me find a lower body workout that doesn’t leave me in pain, which I had basically given up on. Rena is an incredible trainer.

I worked with Uplift Fitness and had to take a break because I suddenly had NO time to workout or really do anything outside of work and sitting at my computer after work. Sometime in there, I developed heel pain and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. I was doing stupid things when I suddenly DID have time again to workout: trying to deadlift 225 because that’s what I used to do, or squatting 175 because again, that’s what I used to do. I left myself more injured and finally reached back out to Rena after a few months of trying to lift with no avail - can’t stay consistent if you keep hurting yourself!
She started off by sending me information and a series of movements to try with the message of “it takes time, but keep moving.” When we talked about what to do, we made a plan on how to approach the pain with on-going check-ins where Rena wanted to know about recovery and feeling in the movement. Because of this slow and steady work, my heel has improved over time and I regularly squat and deadlift at low weights.
I didn’t think I would be able to workout like I am now and am so thankful I started working out with Uplift again!

I began training with Rena at Uplift after a few years of doing beginner powerlifting on my own. She is so great at keeping workouts manageable so that I can go on and live my life without being super strict because I have to destroy my muscles at the gym the next day. I have broken through plateaus by following Rena's programming and I am training at a much lower intensity with much better form.
I also appreciate so much the reminders to eat enough food to fuel training, and the focus on what my body can do (i.e. get up from a chair when I'm old) and not how it looks. I thankfully do not have a history of falling into the toxic diet-and-over-exercise shit that a lot of gyms promote, but none of us are immune to society's bullshit, and I am glad I can trust Rena to be a loving voice of reason that encourages me to take proper care of myself!

I love Rena and Uplift! They are a delight, their programs are fun, and the perfect challenge. I love to lift heavy, push sleds, and challenge myself, and Rena meets me right where I'm at, all while helping me avoid pushing too hard and getting hurt. She wants her clients to get stronger, which means rest, recovery, and yes, smart fitness plans. I pay for 3 months of programming for $200, along with video check-in's if I need help. They are wonderful. I can't recommend Uplift highly enough.

I had a much different experience than the other reviewers here, but I think it is important that it is conveyed as it demonstrates a complete failure to address an individual clients needs and to tailor a work-out session to them (which seems the fundamental purpose of a personal trainer).
When I reached out to Uplift, I noted that I wanted someone to take me gently through exercises to build up slowly. I noted that I tend to have muscles that react adversely when pushed too hard with new exercises.
They assigned me to a trainer, and I met with her yesterday. I told her "pretend I'm a 70 year old man. I need to be eased into anything and to take it slow." Most of the session was talking, but the last 15 minutes she took me through host of very complex and dynamic exercises and then concluded by having me do slow squats with weight for 3 sets. When I left my quads were totally shot. To the point that I could barely bike home. My legs kept buckling when I walked. I had to take Tylenol because they hurt so bad.
I walked in there feeling good and happy; biking and walking and enjoying my life. One day later, I'm too sore and tweaked to walk down the block without pain. This was a failure of both the organization and the trainer. They demonstrated absolutely no ability to titrate or organize a workout to an individual's actual needs. I'd recommend people go elsewhere.
Update:
I want to note that the owner called me the day the session happened and offered to talk me through recovering from it. I also called him today (2 days later) and he was quite responsive and kind. That said, my issue here is that I emphasized at every turn that I wanted to take it slow and be gentle at first. They knew I mostly did exercises like biking and hiking and walking. Eccentric exercises done slowly (what they had me do) use totally different fibers and are much more intense on the body, particularly when someone is not used to it. I get that a lot of people are sore a few days and move on. That’s not me. That’s why I emphasized I wanted to take it slow, which they did not pay attention to or heed. And I’m suffering the consequences. I maintain that this was a fundamental error that caused me harm. I hope I recover quickly but this often is a long road for me. I went into the session fine; now I can’t do the activities I love or even basic things like walking down the block without discomfort. In the future, if a client says take it slow; they should take it very slow. Unfortunately, they didn’t with me.

I've been going to Uplift to train for almost 2 years now and I don't think I could ask for a better personal training setup.
The team at Uplift is attentive, competent, and perhaps most of all - good people. Even on the days when it's hard to bring yourself to the gym, the people and space at Uplift make that so much easier.
My training has felt tailored to my goals even as they have shifted over time. On the days where I don't get rest but still show up I am extended grace. On the days where I come prepared and ready to go, I am nudged to go the extra mile. Training here, I feel understood, supported, and just the right amount of challenged.
For those of you considering personal training, I cannot recommend this place enough.

I got tired of starting workouts and quitting after a week so I decided to try a personal trainer. Best choice I made all year. Found one nearby who offered a free first session. She was super nice and actually listened to my goals instead of just throwing random stuff at me. She showed me how to do each move right and explained why we were doing them. I didn’t feel judged at all even though I was out of shape. We did some strength work and cardio and I was sore but in a good way. She also helped me set some simple nutrition goals without making it complicated. The only thing that was rough was waking up early to do the sessions but I got used to it fast. I already feel stronger and more confident. If you keep quitting on yourself get a trainer like this. It changes everything.

I had an amazing experience with Devon! As someone who really needs to watch their form and unlearn bad habits, I found 1:1 training to be the best fit for me.
Devon really helped me focus on proper form by providing tailored cues and giving me feedback whenever I sent him videos. He also knew when and how to push me, which was super motivating.
He also worked closely with my chiropractor/physical therapist to accommodate my past injuries and existing pain, which I really appreciated. Whenever something came up, Devon would adjust my program or help me modify an exercise. Overall, I highly recommend this gym, and Devon especially! (:

This gym is truly the best! Their small group personal training has been a lifesaver as I’ve been digging myself out of a hole of chronic back pain. Transitioned from weekly physical therapy to lifting twice a week with these fine folks and 3 months in I feel so much stronger and my back pain has improved significantly!
As far as what to expect with small group training: you get your own personal workout plan and guidance aligned to your goals with the added benefit of a couple of other folks also working out to socialize with. I love this way of learning about fitness and being challenged and it’s been great being on this journey with other folks as well! It’s become a non negotiable part of my routine that I absolutely love.
The trainers are super kind and friendly and very knowledgeable when it comes to modifications but also aren’t afraid to tell you when they think you can do more. Devin also has great taste in music 🤘🏼
This gym is super inclusive and a considerate neighbor to all folks that hang out on Cap Hill. The location is awesome and very walkable but for those days you need to drive you can generally find street parking pretty easily by the park.
I LOVE this gym and all the people there, I’m only leaving because I’m moving and even then I find myself considering commuting in rush hour traffic for the awesome vibes ✨

Theo is a fantastic trainer! After a couple of injuries/soft tissue surgeries, I lost a lot of muscle and lost the ability and confidence to do a lot of everyday lifting. Theo was super encouraging and knowledgeable about how to build my program while taking into account my physical impairments. I'm now the strongest I've ever been which is super cool. I spent five months working with Theo & have an extremely functional lower back now for the first time in my life (that part really only took like a month, but now I can also deadlift 225 lbs). Working with Rena for the last several months has been an absolute delight. Rena tailored 3 months of online personal training to me and my needs, and it was truly a game changer for me at the gym. I hadn't done weightlifting for nearly a decade, and I was super intimidated by all of the different machines, and just how to structure a workout in general. Rena was understanding of where I was starting from but also led me to try new things at the gym, and I feel so much more confident at the gym and in myself now. She was quick to answer any questions I had about form, etc. and to check in every week about how things were going. On top of all that, she also adjusted and created bodyweight workouts for me for when I was out of town which I really appreciated. I feel so lucky to have found this gym to start a brand new weightlifting journey. I haven't lifted weights since high school (2004!), and I injured myself then, so I really needed clear guidance and motivation to start back up again. AJ was an absolute joy to train with. I have been training with Devon (and later Jacq) for around 6 months and would give Uplift more than 5 stars if google allowed. As someone who has struggled with confidence and body image my entire life, I never thought I'd be someone who not only goes to the gym, but also learn to love it. I've worked with Uplift Fitness for over two years, and specifically with Rena for about three months. My goals have evolved over time:
- Learning how to lift weights with proper form and get comfortable in the gym
- Getting stronger in general
- Reducing discomfort in my daily life, from walking and my sedentary desk job
Rena and the other trainers I worked with in the past have always done an amazing job of tailoring my programs to whatever my goals were at the time. I've gotten significantly stronger since starting, and I was able to identify and fix the weaker muscles in my body that made it hard for me to walk long distances.
I love the inclusive and supportive language Rena and everyone use when talking about fitness and health. There's absolutely no body shaming, toxic positivity, or diet culture in our sessions.

I have worked with Rena and Uplift Fitness for about 4 years and I can’t recommend them enough! Rena pushes you hard, but makes sure you maintain strength and mobility all while loving the body you have. She’s constantly asking how your body feels and addresses specific concerns as they come up. If your goals are to look better, she can certainly help you with that … but the holistic approach the whole team takes here is inspiring. You better get up in this gig if you’re looking for a trainer. Love them so much!

I can’t say enough good things about Rena and the folks at Uplift Fitness. I’ve worked with many trainers in the past, but I really appreciate Rena’s style of easygoing training and communication. Rena is knowledgable and personable, as well as challenging without being pushy. The fitness programs are consistently on point and they’re easy to pivot if I need a different style of workout because of work or travel. Really great folks, doing great work…and my dogs like ‘em too!

I have been training with Rena for over 3.5 years (WHOA.). Rena is the absolute best. She's great at explaining things clearly, she's a fantastic listener, and she puts a lot of focus on form, something I think a lot of programs unfortunately overlook. I've both gotten stronger and I've gotten less injuries due to her guidance, which is pretty significant!
Not only has Rena helped me become stronger physically, training with her has also really revolutionized how I look at and feel in my body. I'm much more appreciative of how my body is built and works. For me, that's priceless.

Rena was my powerlifting coach for over two years. I started training with her because I wanted help recovering strength post-quarantine. Instead she made me so much stronger than I had ever been before. My technique in every lift became intentional and calculated. She also helped me plan my diet and I credit her with my finally having a healthy relationship with food and my physique. I highly recommend hiring her even if you're not exactly sure what your goals are. She'll help you in ways you didn't even think you needed and soon you won't be able to imagine not having a coach

I've been training at Uplift with Rena for a few years now and have nothing but great things to say. I came to her after working with a couple of other trainers and immediately felt like it was the right fit. She always hits the right balance of pushing me farther than I would push myself, but not too far to make me uncomfortable or risk injury. This is especially important to me as I have a history of rhabdomyolysis, which has never been an issue since training with Rena.
Since starting at Uplift, I've more than doubled my bench and deadlift, learned all kinds of useful new exercises/warmups/stretches, and became more comfortable and confident working out in the gym solo.

I highly recommend working with Alexa at Uplift Fitness! I worked with Alexa for a few months, doing 1:1 training sessions twice a week. I had a trainer a few years ago, but I lost momentum and really wanted to work on regaining strength and mobility. Alexa took the time to ground my movement in proper form/technique, explaining the how and why behind each exercise. In just a short amount of time, I was lifting weights I never dreamt of lifting with ease and fluidity. Her coaching style is motivating, encouraging, and empathetic. She is also hilarious and a fun person to hang out with — looked forward to training mornings, even the days we did weighted step ups. Big thanks!!

I’ve worked with Devon and Rena for over a year now, and it’s been transformative to say the least.
Prior to working with them, I tried everything outside of coaching to keep up a consistent fitness “routine”— crossfit, boxing, HIIT classes, etc, but I always found myself burnt out or injured.
Rena and Devon eased me into training that felt way more informed, personalized, and sustainable. I learned a ton from them throughout the process and surprised myself with how my lifts and mobility improved. I’ve felt stronger and fitter, and I haven’t had any injuries since working with them.

I worked with Rena 3 times a week while I trained for a mountain expedition. Due to my sort of crazy work schedule, we had to meet at the ungodly hour of 5:30am. Rena was always chipper as could be, it was almost sicking really how excited she was to exercise.
I had never done a squat in my like, I had never really done any meaningful exercise at a gym at all, actually. The only real experience exercising I have is cardio. She was super helpful, super patient and really just fun to hang out with. After only a few weeks we had running jokes, she would let me pick the music, though my brain wasn't really functional at that hour so she usually picked. I still have songs in my spotify playlist from our exercises. She has an awesome sense of humor that really makes the time fly.
She is clearly knowledgable about exercise (one would hope with a personal trainer right? Kind of seems like a given), nutrition (again, I feel like this goes without saying, but maybe this is what tips the balance and makes you decide to pick her).
I am currently focusing on other goals, but when I come back around for another mountain expedition or I am just trying to get stronger/healthier, Rena is the one I trust.

I’ve had the pleasure of training with Rena to work on my strength training goals. She is super knowledgable and caring. She pushes me hard but in a way that I really appreciate and that is not too intense. Not only have I gotten a lot stronger but her training has translated to gains in my endurance sports as well. She really takes the time to come up with individual plans and keeps the workouts interesting and engaging.
