A gem in Beacon Hill. Small, quiet gym that's especially convenient for proximity and available parking. The owner takes a special interest in getting to know members and makes sure equipment is in fantastic working order. The space is spotlessly clean.
Plenty of treadmills, ellipticals and cardio equipment with HR monitors built in. Three squat racks, smith machine, three benches with dumbbells up to 70 pounds. Two cable pulley machines and plenty of others as well. Bands, TRX, floor accessories -- almost everything you could want at a gym.

Overall similar to a gym at a big hotel
Limited equipment, quality of equipment is mid grade i.e. light to medium light duty benches with minimal adjustments machines are similar light to medium light duty with minimal adjustability . Just two sets of free weights cardio machines are ok nothing here is premium. Not big gets crowded. Owners and staff are nice, just a small gym.

Having been a member of numerous gyms in the last 20 years, I'd say UP is one of my favorites! I'm a solo exerciser and I love the self-service arrangement here. No front desk or personal trainers to interrupt your workouts, just come and go as you please. It also means there are cameras everywhere, which makes me feel safer AND the gym is open 365 days a year.
There is plenty of cardio equipment and machines for weight training. At peak hours, you may have to wait for a treadmill, as with almost any gym. Be aware that there are no locker rooms or showers, but I live nearby so that's not an issue for me.
The owners/management are very responsive, and any time I've had an email with questions or concerns, they respond right away.

Overall a quality, clean gym.
The good: Clean and well organized at all times. Has all the basics of what you'd want.
The bad: It's small. No locker room, just cubbies. No shower. At peak times, there's pretty much always an old person camped out on the machine you want for 10 minutes. Stretching space is limited, but they are using the small space as best they can. The material of the stretching areas is a HUGE issue. It's cheap astroturf fake grass. Mats and shoes slide on this surface, which could easily lead to an injury; it's entirely inappropriate for a gym setting.

Would highly recommend this gym. Never packed but can be busy. People are friendly but stick to themselves. All types of people not just gym bros go here so its really not intimidating. Only feedback for UP is to get rid of some ellipticals and add more stair climbers!

This gym has everything I ever need, and there's never a wait for equipment. Ownership is good people. If one of the locations is in your area, you could do much worse.

Really loving the gym! Has everything you need, good bathroom, people have been very chill. Mostly people stick to themselves. Easy to find parking around the area. And the owner includes some excellent dad jokes on the board at the front!

I was a member for a few months back in 2022 and I had a very positive experience. Super easy to sign up and cancel. The gym is small but has everything that you need. Never crowded and super clean (I saw the owner cleaning the equipment a couple times). Much better experience than any other big box gyms.

One of the only great gyms in Beacon Hill. It has all the essential equipment you would expect at a gym with some extras. It's clean, organized and very easy to access. They play a nice variety of music at a relatively low volume (so you can still listen to your own without issue). Highly recommend!

Urban playground is an oasis amongst a gym desert. I tried out 4 other gyms in Seattle and none came close to the quality of Urban Playground. The dumbbells are great, the equipment and facility is always clean and organized, and the community is really friendly. I never have to wait for equipment or treadmills, so Iβm always in and out really quick. 10/10 gym

A great small and quiet gym! I love working out here - never too busy and they have just about everything you could need in a small and space. The owners are very nice and they keep the gym very clean. Would definitely recommend this gym.

It's never too crowded here, which is nice. There are no showers, but big bathrooms to change in if needed. There are a few machines, so if you rely heavily on that, it's best to get more familiar with free weights.
The fellow members seem to be in the zone, focused on their goals. I seldom see chit-chat, which makes me feel more focused on my goals as well. Everyone seems very friendly, though.
Sign up is easy, and if you have questions, the owner is VERY FAST at responding, which is another huge plus.
It's a great spot.

I really enjoy this neighborhood gym. Always clean. Small and intimate, but I never really see it crowded at the times I go. Personal trainers available (I looked into it, but didn't actually work with any). Parking is ample around the area. Every member is provided a security access code to gain entry no memberships cards to carry or sign in required otherwise. There is no typical on-site staff which is no issue, just a fact.

Urban Playground is a GREAT gym. The no contract deal came in clutch being a short term, traveling nurse. It's always super clean, the equipment is very nice, and it's never insanely crowded. The owner is also very kind and personable. I would definitely recommend this gym to friends!

As someone who was used to big box gyms, this was one of the best gyms I have ever used for a multitude of reasons. Even though this is a smaller gym, it has all the equipment for any workout, all of which is in perfect functional state. The space is clean, all the people who go are respectful, the music is pleasant and not too loud. It feels like a safe and energizing space. The owner of the gym, Chris, is incredibly kind and communicative and helped me out on multiple occasions. I would recommend this gym over any others in the area.

A great self-service gym! I use their 6 month membership plan and was very impressed with how they have handled the pandemic. Not only did they credit my account for the months they were closed, but they have been very consistent in providing masks and sanitizer now that they're open again. Great equipment, great location, great service.

I love my gym Urban Playground. Chris the owner has helped me get back into the swing of it and provided guidance when sidelined by a unexpected surgery and even put my membership on hold during the process. People in the gym are very focused on their workouts rather than parading around trying to get noticed. The gym is kept clean on a daily basis and equipment is new and well maintained. I never have a problem finding a parking space in the garage and Street parking is quite available. There are plenty of windows so you can look out while youβre working out. Equipment ranges from the usual aerobic machines to matrix fitness machines to TRX and free weights. The Wi-Fi is strong. Everyone follows the COVID-19 restrictions and setting up an appointment during this time online is very easy. I highly recommend this gym For someone that is serious about getting back into shape And taking care of themselves Going forward. Thank you Chris for creating this wonderful Neighborhood gym.

I love this gym for these reasons
1. Clean and sanitized
2. Lowkey and no obnoxious gruntings and taking up a squat rack for 30 minutes
3. Not crowded
4. The most important is the sense of community
I ran into at least three people that I grew up with and on top of that the owner Chris has helped and taught me so much about my body and training. He is super easy to talk to and is willing to show you different exercises and stretches that help with the aches and pains I got while running. My physical therapist was really surprised by the flexibility and mobility gains I got in my joints just from the moves Chris taught me. It is an awesome gym and you won't regret signing up. Go out there and achieve your goals whether it is losing some weight, gaining muscle, or running a marathon, make today that day to change your life for the better.

This is such a great gym! The owners/trainers are great and highly skilled. Classes are good and free. No pressure and I run into people I know so very local feeling (not like a corporate gym at all).

This review is for Chris M!!!! Great guy and amazing coach! I have known and been coached by Chris since 2003 back when he was an athletic director. As a student athlete, he was extremely supportive and helpful in my heath and career! If your working with Chris, you are in great hands! Highly recommended!
