Working with Matt at Forest Coaching has been an incredible experience. I was needing a lot of support after coming back from a long time away from working out and injuries, and Matt was excellent. I was initially unsure about working with a male coach, as I had a lot of toxic male coaches when I played organized sports, but Matt is so supportive, kind, caring, and knowledgeable. He immediately put me at ease, understood where I was coming from, and provided all the tools I needed to get started again. I love the holistic approach to both strength and mobility, as well as their use of neuro re-training. I've gained back a lot of strength and stabilization, but most importantly for me, the confidence to work out again on my own and actually enjoy it. Some gyms and trainers I've worked with in the past I dreaded, because the workouts were so punishing and the trainers just wanted me to do what they told me, without taking into account my injuries and needs. That's totally the opposite with Forest Coaching. I never dread the workouts because I know Matt will push me, but he'll always prioritize my comfort and safety. The one:one work with coaches here would be great for anyone at any level, but I think especially if you have no idea where to start, or you're recovering from injuries or a lifetime of toxic coaching, this is a really great place to be. I have only great things to say about the staff and the studio; I'm so lucky I live close by to this gem!

I've worked with Matt weekly for five months and it's easily been the best experience I've ever had in terms of fitness (F in late 50s). I originally came for strength and wanted to have fun so we started with kettlebells and I've gained pounds of muscle and bone! I was surprised to discover he could also work with chronic pain and he's done a lot to teach me how to send my nervous system messages of safety, reducing pain frequency and intensity. And indeed, it's super fun to work with him. I learn something every week and he is amazing at being spontaneous relative to what I'd like to work on. The rest of the team is great too. Easy to schedule and work with. I also love the space.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Amanda once a week since August 3rd. Under her patient, wise guidance I have gained greater body awareness, strength, and vitality. I’m in my late 60s and appreciate her understanding of how I absorb information. She speaks slowly, clearly and presents the movements in a way that I can understand. She doesn’t miss a thing. Learning new things can sometimes be a challenge as we age. If the pace was too quick or the information delivered too rapidly, I don’t think I would be improving as quickly as I am. I’m thankful for being referred to this unique facility by Dr. Nicole Fenske.

I worked with Matt for a year and half before I moved away from Madison, I really wish I can somehow move Annie Forest Coaching with me.
Working with Matt was the best decision ever. I came in being terrified and a little traumatized by working out and gym culture as a whole, especially being a fat queer person, approaching fitness has always been a bit complicated, Matt helped me find power and joy in lifting and strength training. He is incredibly knowledgable and professional, he designed our classes in a way that motivates me, challenges me, as well as heals me and my relationship to movements, body, and diet culture. Matt is always patience, understanding, and supportive, he helped me through so many difficult and challenging personal and physical moments.
The rest of the Annie Forest coaches and staff also put so much love and effort in cultivating a community that is truly welcoming to everyone. I learnt a lot from working with Matt and I'm proud to be able to bring these skills and philosophies with me wherever I go. I'm even more grateful to be able to forge friendship here.
Give it try, you really would love it.

Forest is a gem - a great place with a great team. I discovered in 2022, after being pretty inactive during COVID. I felt intimated returning to fitness. Matt McHugh was my trainer, and I couldn't recommend his enough. He is patient, supportive, fun, and knows his stuff---plus he always plays good music :) Matt listened to my goals and helped to create a solid plan. I was new to kettlebells, and Matt really guided me in proper form and technique. I definitely saw big changes in my strength and stability. If you are looking for a supportive, talented team to help you reach your goals, Forest is the place for you.

I cannot say enough good things about working with Annie over the last 6 months (and Matt, when Annie and my schedules haven't matched up!). I have a history of being an athlete, but after having a second baby I was becoming increasingly frustrated with my slow recovery. My body felt out of sync and I could not make any progress on my own. I started working with Annie and I feel like I have found a personal trainer who not only works with me physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Honestly, while I am happy with my physical gains, I am so much more surprised and pleased with my mental fortitude and emotional growth under Annie's instruction. Pretty much every session I cry and laugh and sweat and it is incredibly therapeutic. She truly understands me as an entire human, not just a body. 10/5 stars!

Annie and her team are helping me heal from prior injuries and gain strength safely. I still have a ways to go to reach my goals and am confident that with their unique approach and positive support and guidance I will get there!

Literally the best gym and best trainers I have ever worked with! Like LIFE-CHANGING good. I am notorious for starting things but not sticking with them, but I’ve been here for a year and don’t ever see myself leaving! I work primarily with Amanda, who specializes in hypermobility/EDS (among other things). She has taught me so much about my EDS, and I am so much stronger and in less pain since I’ve started working with her. She is amazing at adapting workouts based on how I actually feel that day. She is sooo knowledgeable and a great teacher. She is also just really caring and supportive, and is great at celebrating your success. Lastly, I have had some really terrible life events happen, and Amanda, Annie, and staff truly went above and beyond to help me out during those tough times. You will never regret a day spent here!

TLDR; been training here for a year and I sincerely recommend Annie and her team to anyone who has chronic pain, is trying to build a positive relationship to movement and their body, or those wishing to build strength functionally and sustainably.
As a fat-bodied person, finding a space and a trainer that I felt comfortable working with seemed like a high order. I was recommended to Annie and was very curious about her neuroscience based approach to coaching. During our initial consultation I was able to share my goals for functional strength, to build a relationship with movement that ACTUALLY feels good, and reduce the chronic pain I’d been having. I also shared my experiences as a previous athlete, my struggle with toxic diet and gym culture, poor experiences with previous trainers, and a fear that I’d be told to just “work harder” and do more restrictive diets to manage my pain by weight loss. I’ve now been working with Annie weekly for almost a year and I can say that she and her team are the best, most compassionate, and caring people in this industry that I have ever met. Whenever something hurts, I say so and we problem solve together, none of the “just push through it” mentality. She does such a wonderful job of explaining why we’re doing something and how it relates to my goals, and she shifts our activities during sessions to match my own energy as it fluctuates from week to week so I know I’ll always leave feeling better than when I walked in the door. I appreciate the flexibility to do semi-private coaching as well and recently organized some of my coworkers to do a group session once a week (they’re also amazed and love the process). I love everything about Annie’s process, her mission, and her as a person. I really cannot say enough positive things about my experiences here and the people who work at this studio.

The staff at Forest Coaching are all incredible. They have impressive lists of certifications, including Strong First SFG II, Dragon Door RKC, Z-Health brain-based training, Oxygen Advantage Advanced, and so on. These certifications aren't just for show, either. I have worked with several trainers at Forest, and it is clear that they have all trained very hard and deeply understand the movements they ask their clients to complete. The staff are truly experts of their craft.
Now, for my story... I started training at Forest as a complete beginner. I felt intimidated by commercial gyms and utterly confused by the sheer amount of highly opinionated and often conflicting advice available online and in books. Having never picked up a kettlebell before, I wanted to learn how to do some fundamental kettlebell movements safely and properly. I started out not being able to smoothly swing or press a 16kb bell, and after working with Matt for two months in-person and then following two months of at-home programming, I could military press a 32kg multiple times, complete 120+ one hand swings in 10 minutes, do snatches with great form, do kettlebell complexes with two kettlebells, and much more. I am absolutely blown away by my progress, and Matt has helped me crush every goal I've set for myself along the way!
The thing that really sets this studio apart is the staff's knowledge of neurology and brain-based training. I'm a psychologist, and I admit that I was skeptical about the whole brain-based training language, but I can attest to the efficacy of this now. The trainers are certified in Z-Health, and know a seemingly endless number of tricks to improve people's sensory perception, body awareness, energy levels, grip strength, endurance, or whatever the need is. For example, stretching in a way that gently flosses your radial arm nerve can improve your grip strength before doing a heavy kettlebell press. It really is amazing how accurate and beneficial the brain-based movements are. In addition to gaining a lot of strength, I have also become much more flexible and mobile. Many of the movement drills and brain-based training strategies simultaneously improve a skill (like squatting) and mobility (hip flexibility). Over time, I've noticed that everyday activities like sitting comfortably on the ground, twisting, bending, etc have gotten surprisingly easier for me. In fact, I didn't even realize how inflexible I was before until my mobility improved as a positive side effect of my training here.
While I have used the training and programming at Forest to improve my strength, I have met many other people along the way who have severe pain, injuries, or limited mobility and train here because the coaches are exceptionally talented at navigating these issues in a completely body-positive, accepting, and safe environment. Annie is particularly talented at that. Amanda is very knowledgeable about endurance sports, and I've also met people who primarily run/cycle and train here to gain supplementary strength without overtraining. If you're interested in breath work, Amanda is also an expert in that area. For those interested in kettlebell movements or classic strength training lifts, Matt and Troy are awesome. In all honesty though, you can't go wrong with any of the coaches, as they are all knowledgeable in each of these areas.
Overall, I can honestly say that working with the trainers at Forest Coaching is one of the most beneficial things I've done in my entire life, and it's easily the best thing I've done for my physical health. I haven't felt this strong, flexible, or confident ever before, and it sure feels amazing! Please give this studio try. They have many options from online video courses, private coaching, group coaching, pay-what-you-can community kettlebell events, at-home training plans, and more. It really is life-changing!

I was referred to Forest Coaching for concussion rehabilitation in October 2021. I had no idea how life-changing working with Amanda would be. I have Fibromyalgia and hEDS, which cause chronic pain and fatigue. Since I began coaching, I've had only one Fibro flare, when I used to live in a constant state of flare. I'm now able to do more with my kids, for myself, and can enjoy life without constant pain.
I *highly* recommend Forest Coaching for anyone dealing with chronic pain, fatigue, migraines, dizziness, and so much more!

Working with Annie over the last 7 years has been an integral part of my wellness, strength and calming. As an executive, business owner and a human with an invisible disability Annie’s approach is dynamic in meeting me where I’m at for the day; whether I’m feeling strong, needing tender care, she keeps each session customized to my needs. Having an invisible disability there are times when my body does not function the way it can at others and Annie never ceases to impress me with the range of neuro-scientific information she can use to get my body to a better place.

I worked with Amanda in an eight-week class and in a 90-minute session to improve my breathing. Amanda is an Oxygen Advantage-certified trainer. I have severe asthma and wanted to learn more about how to improve my breathing capacity. In the private studio session, she did a lot of different, slightly unusual, tests of my breathing, balance, and coordination. In the end, she provided a list of very specific and helpful exercises for me to practice.
The class took a lot of these ideas and expanded on them to give me a better understanding of how breathing practice works and how it can further help me.
Amanda's help was worth every penny. I feel like I'm improving daily in avoiding lots of asthma medications and treatments.
I highly recommend the drive to Madison to see her, and I highly recommend the online class.

As an "upper'"middle-aged woman who has never found a friend in exercise (or healthy living, for the most part), I have been under-impressed with most previous trainers or other exercise directives. I got them, I understood how they helped many, but I frequently would push---or get pushed---too far. That feeling that I'm about to die and can't move for two days due to post-workout pain lingered and always seemed too easy to abandon. While I was previously motivated by wanting to lose weight, or have a 'better' body, I'm now in it to preserve my mobility, prevent falls, and feel more confident in moving about in the world. I want the strength to climb waterfalls and carry my own luggage through a medieval castle. Those are my goals. At Forest Coaching I have felt heard and have learned an incredible amount about the wiring of strength and movement, and how to correct weaknesses in my muscles in the most interesting of ways. I am pushed just the right amount to notice steady progression in my strength and coordination, and gentle tips for other aspects of health are worked into the training sessions. I have taken a few of the extra online classes and they are also very informative. This is definitely a different kind of place, and I can't recommend it enough!

The trainers here are fabulous and empowering. They have helped me increase my strength, pre-hab before surgery, rehab after, and guided me back towards my goals of enjoying long runs again and someday being able to do a couple of pull-ups. No matter what I'm working on, Annie, Amanda, and Troy have provided me with fun workouts, breath training, neurological training, both in person and via online remote sessions. I am stronger than I've ever been, and love the community of inclusion and support provided by the studio. I would recommend them to anyone who has a goal that they need support to reach, has an injury that is preventing them from enjoying sport (or life), and has a willingness to learn new things beyond rep and weights. Your body will thank you for giving them a try!

Take group classes here and look forward to going every week - everyone I've met so far is super nice and fun . Cari and Annie are both amazing at what they do and nicely tailor the exercises to suite the individual. Wonky hips? No problem. Bum knee - got your covered. Vestigial tail? Wag away! It's all good. Get yourself an eyepatch and come on down. You'll get a great workout no matter what - even if you won't feel it until the next day (they're sneaky like that). I have attended Annie’s classes for at least 4 years...because she is great! Her coaching style and techniques produce amazing and somewhat surprising results both with strength and endurance - and they are fun. The results seem surprising because the classes built on prior work (and are tailored to the individual) and don’t necessarily feel crazy intense. Yet after the workout (or the next day) your muscles tell you that you’ve had a really effective session. And the results add up quickly over time. I highly recommend Annie’s fun classes.

Cari has been great to work with. what i like best is the individualized approach. each time we meet you asks how I'm doing, what i need to focus on. and then she taylors her approach to meet my needs, while building up my core, making sure my balance is improving, and keeping me as flexible as i can be. if i'm having trouble with a position or exercise, she looks to find a solution that works for me. and she's always encouraging!

Cari offers a unique yoga experience exquisitely blending her wisdom as a strength coach, yoga teacher, and energy worker. Cari creates a safe space in which to explore what is true for you, while offering practical tools and techniques to bring greater strength, flexibility, aliveness and peace to your body, mind, & spirit. I find Cari a delightful blend of compassion, strength (inner & outer), wisdom, humility, authority, curiosity, goofiness, grace, competence, beauty, authenticity, power, and mystery.

After years of lower back pain, failed physical therapy, and inability to do things that I loved (running, biking, etc.), I started one-on-one sessions with Annie. I am constantly amazed at how much I learn, the improvements in pain relief and fitness, and the sheer joy that I receive in going to these sessions.
Annie teaches fitness and pain relief in the context of neuroscience, which is not only fascinating but also intrinsically useful if you want to understand how your brain interprets pain and how to see that pain as an instructive device, rather than something to fear. My back pain is rare these days, but when I do feel pain, I can identify possible triggers and I have an ever-increasing set of tools to rely on for help.
As far as overall fitness, I am infinitely stronger than I was. Annie continues to teach me when and how to recruit different muscles for different movements and the power of proper breathing. She is such a uniquely compassionate and joyful person to be around that each session is therapeutic. We talk about how I feel physically, as well as food, sleep, and stress. There is no judgement. She has talked me off the ledge a few times when my back pain has been so bad that I can hardly move, and I love how available she is if I have any issues or questions.
I would recommend Annie to virtually anyone, whether you struggle from chronic pain or simply want to be a stronger, healthier version of yourself!

If you want to learn hardstyle kettlebell (and you should) and live in the Madison area, then this is the place to go. She offers both personal training and classes. With a few PT sessions you'll have the basics of core kettlebell techniques: the swing and the turkish get up. There are several classes a week to fine tune your skills and get a great workout. Classes are a mixture of kettlebell and bodyweight exercise. I've been training with Anne since 2015, taking both personal training sessions, attending class about once a week. She's also writes workout plans.
Annie is really great to work with. Everyone has their injuries and sticking points. She takes time to tailor a training program to your needs and has a lot of experience and techniques at her disposal to help. Plus, she is excellent at training kettlebell skills.
I can not recommend Forest Coaching and Studios highly enough.

I was at my wit's end with my chronic pain (back/hip/glute area) when I started working with Anne. I used to be incredibly active, and with the pain, over a few years I gradually stopped doing all the physical activities that brought me great joy. I thought maybe I was going to have the pain for the rest of my life, which was overwhelming. I cycled through a half-dozen PTs, doctors, and chiropractors trying to find a solution. All of them prescribed hip circles and glute bridges after talking with me for 7 minutes, which didn't help!
Anne, on the other, hand listened carefully to all I had to say, to help her understand what may be underlying causes. Working with her is very personal, you can tell she doesn't have knee-jerk solutions (along the lines of "oh, you have pain here? Hip circles for you!) She is focused how all of my muscles and brain work together, and helping me understand that too. She's helped me understand the science of pain, the things that cause it, and now I have a toolkit of strategies to get relief it comes. She's helped me learn how to tune into my body, and notice when it's sending messages. Not only am I finally getting relief from years of pain - I've learned so much and I'm getting so strong! Most importantly, she's helped me find joy again in being physically active.

When I began my search for a personal trainer, my top priority was to find someone who has a solid understanding of the body. I have stenosis in my back and the exercise routine I had been following (which I thought would be beneficial) was causing me substantial discomfort. Anne proved to be the perfect fit for me!! Over the past 9 months, she has shown me exercises to do to eliminate the pain I had been experiencing. She incorporates the principles of “Z Health” which “re-map” the brain and build life skills such as balance and coordination ---- which we tend to lose as we age --- while building physical strength. Anne’s unique approach to personal training addresses all 3 facets of the individual ---- mind, body and spirit; the “typical” personal trainer focuses on building physical strength and overlooks the other two “pieces of the puzzle” (mind and spirit). She “checks in” with you at the beginning of each session to see how you are feeling and, based on how you are feeling that particular day, she is able to intuitively create the best workout for you! I look forward to every session we have and I always leave feeling better than I did when I arrived. Anne is an excellent personal trainer and life coach!

Anne is the real deal. What she has created at PULSE Kettlebells and Yoga is truly extraordinary. When I met Anne a little over a year ago I was depressed and feeling very out of touch with my body. Now I'm preparing to certify as a kettlebell instructor in May! I could not be more excited and grateful and it is all because of my work with Anne. And I'm not the only one who has experienced these transformations. I've seen people become stronger, have more cardiovascular endurance, more body awareness and more flexibility by working with Anne at Pulse. Anne brings a truly unique mix of intelligence, humor, common sense and fun to the table. She knows strength work backwards and forwards (she's SFG II certified...the highest certification in her field) and she's also a trained yoga teacher. She's VERY good the two, leaving with a balanced workout that let's you live you life with less pain and more joy. Her workouts at tough and you will definitely feel the effects, but she never risks injury. In fact, she's very adept at tailoring workout both to people's strengths and to their limitations. I feel at home at Pulse and newcomers are ALWAYS welcomed and encouraged. There aren't enough good things to say about Anne and PULSE. If I could give her 10 stars I would. Try Pulse. You'll be glad you did. You will be well cared for and challenged to become your best, not someone else's idea of your best. This isn't some generic, cookie-cutter place where they run you through the same 5 exercises every time. This place is really different and I'm so, so grateful that it is here in Madison!
