Taylor is awesome in many ways. Individual attention while helping everyone is unique among instructors. All Basecamp instructors are great but Taylor is fabs. Molly is also extremely good at making people work hard and breaks up the routine. Molly is amazing too. I’ve actually never joined a gym prior to Basecamp (well into my 50’s) but these guys keep me coming back. I actually attribute a recent 24 Hour MTB Race victory to the supplemental training I get at this Basecamp.

I tagged along while visiting from Philly. I’ve been a fitness instructor for 8 years and been in this scene a while and I was extremely impressed with the staff here. Tara my instructor was great, checked in with me before and during class, and had lovely energy. Katie the front desk staff was incredibly kind, made me feel welcome, gave me a detailed rundown, checked in with my injuries and workout experience, and found me after to ask how it was. If I was local I’d 100% be coming back here and find this studio to be very friendly and welcoming if you were a beginner. Workout was also great.

I typically go to Junction (my review is already up for that location) but I have done a few classes at Monroe. I always have a great time working out with the team - they are very happy to be there and everyone seems to be close with the people who come in frequently. I brought my mom to the classes there and they took the time to learn about her and watch for her form and talk through alternatives when she felt weak or unable to do certain workouts.

From the moment I walked in, I felt welcome! Katie greeted me and showed me around (they even made me a welcome sign!), she explained everything and was genuinely excited I was there. Molly was our trainer, she checked in with me periodically, made me feel comfortable and even helped me with my form. Very supportive and welcoming staff. The workout itself was great; I loved the rotations and changing up the workouts/pace. You were encouraged to modify or slow down if needed, recognizing that everyone’s workout is different. I finally found a fitness studio that makes me excited about working out!! With the hip location on Monroe Street, cool lighting and high-energy vibe, workouts here feel more like a party than a chore. (I've been known to previously compare working out to doing the dishes - it's just something you have to do, even though it's not fun.) But Basecamp Fitness has changed my mindset.

The coaches are all super motivating and feel like friends (shout-out to Greta, Hilja, & Jen) and their upbeat attitudes make it easy to stay engaged and excited about coming back. Plus with classes lasting 35 minutes, I can't use the "I don't have time to workout" excuse anymore. Sometimes I even stay the extra 10 minutes after class for the core workouts... who am I?

Before reading: I did try to cancel my membership, I am still a current member.
Basecamp lacks accountability when it comes to transparency with their contracts (at the Monroe St. Location), they will hold you to the contract no matter what because they want the money you promised when you signed on the dotted line. I did try to get out of mine, but I was dismissed and told I need to be held accountable. No consideration for big work/life changes was given. So be careful to read it and understand it or you might be lulled into signing off after a 3min. conversation with a hype man.
Basecamp’s app that you select your classes through has some issues. Selecting classes takes 3-4 tries sometimes and force-stopping the app. If you double click, you can make the mistake of booking and then cancelling which automatically charges your card on file $10. Also, I just had this happen where they take attendance and somehow miss you and charge you $10 as well. You can talk with them and Basecamp will refund your card but it shouldn’t happen to begin with.
Basecamp is a membership that is overpriced for what you get with the limited times allotted and the lack of variety you get compared to most gym memberships you could get in the area. Ex. On weekends when people have the most time, you have 3 early to mid-morning classes you can attend and that is only at specific locations. You could justify the price with their use of coaches leading you through workouts but the workouts themselves are done through a video guide that you follow along. I respect the coaches and I think they work hard and bring good energy with them, but I have 3 issues with them in their role that is more dealing with Basecamp practices than any individual:
1. Lack of technique can result in injury. Very rarely do I see a coach work with individuals on technique. A coach might mention technique or proper form, but it is only a shout to the class while you’re busy with your current workout, so it is hard to even get the information. Reinforcement of good technique should be more proactive in my mind and even done 1 on 1 as needed with a member. Basecamp is interval training that can be exhausting and that’s when you see people start to lose technique and put themselves at risk, especially if they didn’t start the workout with good form because they were never coached or taught how to do the lift properly from the start.
2. Lack of consistency in teaching technique amongst the different coaches. Again, I don’t see technique shown often but I have seen multiple coaches teach the same lift or exercise differently, one time even just the wrong technique. This is just my eye test though and I am not certified, and I don’t hold a degree in sports medicine/Kines. However, I have worked with strength coaches from a young age, and I have worked with UW Madison strength and conditioning for about 4 years; people with said certificates in strength and conditioning, personal training or have degrees in sports medicine. At Basecamp you don’t see coaches with those trusted credentials and if they have them, they don’t promote those credentials or post them anywhere on the website that I have seen which would be good exposure for them.
3. Revolving door of coaches. Since I started in December/January I think I have seen upwards of 6 new coaches, people advertised as new coaches that came and went. Plenty of reasons why they could have left but I think it speaks more to some coaches being promoted from member to coach and Basecamp just being a steppingstone for staff. This is just an issue when you go back to having a lack of consistency and promoting long-term credentialed staff. Mainly my opinion and not based off much other than seeing new coaches come and go.

Overall, I would accomplish your fitness goals elsewhere at a number of other more transparent places where you can exercise without putting yourself at risk and establishments that have a human element of understanding when it comes to contract cancellations.

Let me start by saying I HATE working out, but I LOVE Basecamp. I have tried a lot of different classes and end up getting in my head a lot and working out puts me in a very negative space that isn't super healthy. When I tried Basecamp it was a completely different experience than anything I've tried before, the coaches are so positive, encouraging, and helpful. They encourage you but not in a generic gym class kind of way, but in a way where they genuinely care about you and your progress. The work out is so fast paced and it's really easy to modify the movements to make it work for any fitness level. I was expecting to maybe do this for a week then be over it, but after 3 months I'm going strong and look forward to every class. If you are someone who doesn't enjoy work outs or struggles with healthy motivation, try Basecamp out you won't regret it!

I enjoy the classes at Basecamp, but trying to cancel is the reason for my 3 star review. I had some personal events pop up that would prevent me from attending classes. I had already paid for a full month where I couldn't attend any classes, so I called to cancel the next month. They told me that due to their 30-day cancellation policy there was nothing they could do. However a friend of mine (who I referred to basecamp) was able to cancel without giving the 30-day notice and was given no hassle. I wanted to return when I actually could attend classes again but unlikely to after this.

I had initially joined Basecamp to cross train for a mountaineering trip - 2+ years later I’m still a member because I love it. It’s quick, effective, and all you have to do is show up and do the work. One thing that sets Basecamp apart is that the environment is inclusive and membership represents all age groups and demographics of Madison who just want to take 45 min out of their day to get exercise in, in a structured and shared space. That’s what I love about it most. Secondly, the workouts are challenging and results-driven, while being manageable for all fitness levels. I can’t speak more highly of the coaches, staff, class structure and scheduling, everything.

My boyfriend and I recently moved to Madison and didn't know anybody in the area. Basecamp was recommended to us by a friend, and we quickly realized why he spoke so highly about the gym. Not only is it an awesome workout, but the people are amazing! The staff and the coaches make you feel like you are part of a family. I enjoyed the classes, but I had to put down a $200 deposit for the "Free Facebook 21 day challenge" to "hold me accountable" that they assured me I would get back after completing the challenge, which I did. But still no deposit refund in sight and no answer to my emails.

This is the only gym I've ever joined (and I've tried a lot) where I felt like I was part of a family. The coaches and desk staff call you by name and ask about things you've been doing. They actually care about how I am as a person, not just how my fitness goals are progressing. I've never still been excited to go to a gym after being there a year, but here I am still as excited as the first day I went! Basecamp is for community and lifestyle, not just a "quick fix".

Gonna make you sweat! My wife and I recently visited Basecamp Monroe St. and were pleased with the welcome smiles, team, and ultimately the sweat! We were welcomed by Audra who helped introduce us to the studio and checked in with us at the completion of our workout. Our session was booked through ClassPass. Mackie was the coach and she did a nice job, upbeat, motivating and have some fist bumps when changing stations. She did a nice job with a reading at the end of the class about #embracethesuck and that was a nice way to finish confirming we survived the weights and air bikes. Facility was clean and the gym floor was nice with rubber floors that gave a bit when walking and lifting. Mirrors were nice too, since we don't normally have them where we exercise. Nice work Basecamp Monroe team. We live quite far away but we'll be back for an occasional drop-in and change of pace from our normal routine!
