Really happy with our time at BBA thus far. The instructors are really engaging with the toddlers (and I assume that translates to the older groups). The facility is clean and neat. My toddler is learning confidence and the routine of going is helpful in building discipline and personal growth. She's proud of herself when she earns stripes or new belt, so she's learning the foundation of things/accolades/accomplishment etc. being earned over time. In general I find that something like martial arts is worth while in developing a confident kid who learns some basic self defense and life skills, and I highly recommend BBA to anyone considering enrolling their child somewhere.

My five-year-old daughter and six-year-old son have been with black belt America for about a year now. It has been so great for both of them from a discipline standpoint, from a self-esteem standpoint, increasing focus, and just an overall great place to have fun, while working on strength and coordination.

BBA has always been incredibly responsive to communication. My son had input regarding one of his instructors techniques... instead of taking it in a negative fashion they were very open and understood that different kids respond to different techniques. That instructor modified his teaching style when interacting with my son. That speaks volumes for me.. I was really impressed. We have been sending our oldest to BBA since the 2024 school year began. We have notice her self-confidence grow with each earned strip, each broken board (during classes and during graduation), and each achieved patch. BBA has also helped her learn more about respecting herself and others as well as having better focus in daily activities.

I am also impressed with the staff and their communication with families, particularly after we sent them a message about concerns for our own kid. We msged them after our kid got home (so around 6pm) not expecting to hear back from them until the next day at the earliest. Within minutes of receiving our msg, we received a reassuring call from them.

Hoping our kid continues on after this after-school program is done for the school year. And hoping our other kid also starts and enjoys it!

Here we are 9 nine years later, my son is a black belt. My second kid is on the way to earning a black belt as well. The team continues to be fun and supportive in building real life skills. BBA is also one of the most inclusive and diverse place for kids activity in Madison.

My son joined Little Ninja recently and totally loves it. Mr. O' Donnell is amazing with kids. Each week, they do slightly different set of things to practice and improve on what they did before - in a very fun, age appropriate way (like pretending to be animals, jumping thru the lily pad etc). He keeps the children very engaged and fun. The whole team is very kind and patient, at the same time, firm to make sure the kids listen and follow instructions. Mr. Blackmore, a former BBA student who now leads the aftercare program, is always willing to help or guide parents and students without hesitation.

What truly sets Black Belt America apart is their sense of community. They extend their care beyond their students to embrace the community. In addition to organizing events open to everyone (like their Trunk Or Treat), they run "Parent's Night Outs" and donate the proceeds to our local schools' PTO/SCOs.

Our journey with aftercare programs began almost two years ago when our eldest started kindergarten, and we tried registering him for the aftercare program at his elementary school, only to find ourselves waitlisted. That year was a struggle, and we even resorted to hosting an au pair, which turned into a nightmare when she totaled our car and left without notice.

We were disheartened when we faced the waitlist for aftercare at our son's elementary school for the second time. That's when we discovered Black Belt America's aftercare program. It was like a ray of hope in our challenging journey. Their program not only met our needs but exceeded our expectations. Our 4-year-old and soon-to-be Kindergartener can't wait to join her big brother in aftercare/Karate next year.

It is a great community of instructors and families both for their after school program and if in the 2 per week classes. The way they break things down helps those who need a structure enviorment to theive, but the extras added when in black belt training help keeps kids morivated and see the possiblities. They understand when it's a parent vs a child fault to make adjustments and communicate options to include the clid whenever possible which makes you feel like family. The Black belts who teach class have very clean technique and i am confident that they all are there for both the love of the art and sharing that with less experienced people. It all started with my children taking classes. They were having so much fun while learning martial arts that I decided to join [age 40]. I never expected that 28 years later, I would earn my 5th degree Black Belt, study martial arts with an amazing group of people, work here as my "retirement" job, and help adults and children discover the same life values and skills that our family learned. Hey! Please let me prepare you, Dear Reader, because I'm about to gush. 😉

Black Belt America just hosted (on Saturday, 9/24) their 2022 WI Invitational Tournament, at Kromrey Middle School, in Middleton, WI. I attended as well as competed, and I simply must share my experience. (FYI: I am a new yellow belt in the adult classes at BBA.)

IAH: I did *not* want to compete in this tournament because I am very uncomfortable in front of strangers/spectators. However, this rotation's focus is CONFIDENCE, so I *made* myself register to compete in this tournament. Talk about nerve-wracking!

OK. So, in an word, it was AWESOME!! I went early enough to watch the black belt divisions, and WOW. I was both awed and humbled by every competitor's focus, determination, and confidence -- even when (*especially* when) something went wrong. Each person was a joy to watch, and moving forward I plan on making every effort to attend as many black belt events as possible. It was simply wonderful to behold as well as extremely informative to someone like me who is still learning the basics. WELL DONE, one and all!

Then came the under black belt divisions. I had no idea what to expect (on top of feeling nervous already), but everything was so well organized that it all went off without a hitch. While I was glad to have practiced the week prior, everyone -- *every one* -- was so pumped up and encouraging that, once I was inside that ring, it felt great to just put forth my best effort. It was exhilarating, and I am so grateful for Mr. Timmerman's teaching and support. I had a fantastic time...

...which brings me to a final point. Of course, all of BBA's higher ups were there and very busy, yet ALL of them -- Mr. & Mrs. Wideman, Ms. Wideman, Ms. Funck, Mr. Timmerman, even Ms. Happel, the tournament Grand Champion! -- asked me, at one point or another, this question: "Did you have fun?" I love this; it made their priorities so clear. Thank you, BBA.

And, yes: I had a ton of fun. Can't wait for the next tournament!

Friendly and knowledgeable instructors with an impressive amount of martial arts knowledge. They have a very strict system for training the people teaching the martial arts so the person doing the teaching isn't just any Black Belt. It's someone who took time to actually learn how to teach.

The curriculum is varied and takes into account the potential for the martial arts to be used in actual self defense. Though some parts of the class focus on being more performative, they are supplemented by other, very practical exercises.

Finally, they're also great with kids. They run an after school program that picks kids up from school, provides them with supervision, and gives them a chance to learn new skills and expend some energy via the included karate class and activities. On top of that they also run a state certified summer camp.

In the months I've been attending BBA's adult class, I've never felt anything short of total encouragement and non-judgement from both the instructors and the other students. The atmosphere and culture there is focused but friendly, and it's truly a joy to attend class there.

Our kids have been going to BBA after school for years. My oldest will be graduating elementary school with a black belt in karate and lifelong friends. I can’t say enough about how amazing this program has been for our kids but what’s truly incredible is how they teach kids to then motivate other kids and become role models in their program. My boys truly look up to the instructors (shout out to Mr Blackmore and Ms Happel) and now have younger kids looking up to them. What started out as a hurried attempt at finding after school care morphed into a wonderful community. We are so lucky to have come across this place that has nurtured our children to become better humans all while keeping them active and teaching them discipline!

This was a awesome event!It was so wonderful to see young people doing possible things with their lives and supporting each other while striving for personal excellence at the same time. Plus nurturing values like discipline, respect and self confidence. All these things are learned and practiced with teamwork and through leadership with participation in karate at Black Belt America.

Black Belt America provides a very fun, energetic and positive experience. Our six year old absolutely loves it. The structure and focus of each class provides a great learning environment, not to mention 30 minute of engaged exercise. We would highly recommend Black Belt America.
