Signed up 10 days ago and never received any paperwork or even access to my online account. Front desk seems somewhat clueless. Wasn’t told gym could be closing in March! (?) Found that out by word of mouth. I have inquired three times about getting a session with a trainer but have not heard back from anyone. Nice enough gym though. Good equipment. Clean. Disappointed in the level of service.

Great gym, great equipment, and clean. My only critiques are some machines are to close to each other and basement (powerlifting area) can use more ventilation. Other than that I enjoyed my time there in this gym while visiting Madison.

The people who run this gym are nice, and they recognize you, which feels comfortable. They respond to emails and other requests. It has a ton of free weights, kettle bells and trx straps. They have reasonable prices. The members are there to work out, everyone is respectful of each other, the equipment and space. All levels of fitness welcome, No judgment. Busiest right after 5pm weekdays.

I enjoy working out here and appreciate the amount of equipment and stations such that even at peak hours I don't have to wait too long for spaces like a deadlift platform or pullup bar.
Deducting one star because there are NO yoga blocks in the stretching area and I've had to lug around my own from home for a year. It seems like this would be such a simple, easy add to make the third floor much more useful! My perception is they don't have yoga blocks on site to support the yoga studio upstairs but they are used as a modification for so many drills and exercises beyond a yoga practice. It would greatly improve my experience at Capital Fitness if they added a handful of blocks to their equipment.

Great gym, but i’ve never seen a gym with worse working hours. Closing at 9 on on the weekend and friday is insane, i feel like it should be minimum 11 pm on weekdays and 12 am on weekends

This place has all the bells and whistles, including microfiber towels for cleaning and calibrated weights. I rarely have to wait for equipment, and going off peak hours is even better. I live nearby, so I’ve never used any of the bathrooms or saunas.

When I registered for the gym, they asked me to sign without telling me the content of the agreement. I signed thinking it was a simple signature required for registration. Then I couldn't come to the gym because I had health problems and I sent them an email for a refund. They said they wouldn't give me a refund. Not only did they not even tell me what I signed, they told me that I approved it and they wouldn't give me a refund. I've never been through such a disgrace before! They got their hands on my money! I want my money back!

The Day Pass Gym Tour continues!
$15, really easy (cash or card), and they’ve got three floors of equipment.
Top floor is cardio & class space, looks nice and has a selection of machines; this is lots better than the usual gym with 200 cross trainers and a single bike.
Basement is powerlifting / free weights based, with calibrated plates if you’re serious. They even have the 0.25lb Rogue increment plates - there’s a lot of really high quality gear here, and enough of it that you don’t end up fighting over “it’s my turn for the 10lb plates”. Five squat racks, four benches, and four lifting platforms.
Middle floor is the usual collection of weight-selection machines you find in any gym, Matrix / Life Fitness, plus most of the Rogue catalogue for plate-loaded machine. This is the only criticism I have of this gym, they’ve got so much equipment that they have kind of run out of space.
But still a fantastic gym, and really great location.

Visitor Review.

This gym has it all in terms of machines and equipment, as they have just recently added even more machines which is always fantastic to see. Staff is always helpful and friendly. Overall very clean gym due to good cleaning policy.

The main issue I would have is that the prices are a bit steep. Almost $100 per month for a gym seems quite a lot since it does not come with like any special machines in terms of spa services (like I have at my home state gym which cost less).

I love Cap fitness! When I moved to Madison I needed a new gym and after touring I knew this would be it. Great amenities, excellent classes, and, best of all, amazing people! I've been a member for almost three years and I can easily say that Capital Fitness has been the best gym I've belonged to. The management team has done a great job updating the equipment over the course of the year with top of the line machines, and they are intentional with the design of the space (e.g., powerlifting in the basement, large workout space upstairs for classes and general movement, etc.). But, I think the thing that makes Cap Fit so special is the culture and environment--it's a welcoming, healthy, judgement-free space. The management team and the trainers are more than happy to show you how to use a piece of equipment or perform an exercise, and the members are friendly and encouraging of one another. Definitely a great place to make friends if you're new to the area! As someone who used to only run, I've become more comfortable learning to lift because of this gym and I look forward to seeing the Cap Fit team and fellow members on a daily basis.

Shady business. Refuses to cancel your membership due to injuries. The only way to cancel your membership is by jumping through 50 hoops or they threaten to send your account to collections. They also throw your name on newly written contracts without your consent! Steer clear of this gym at all costs!

I like capital fitness because it has a lot of bathrooms. Let’s just say that when you’re pushing / giving it all when you’re working out… nature calls.

Nature will go ahead and make sure that I can take care of my business ASAP.

I like to think that I’m an honest guy and a simple man. I rate based on my needs. But hey I see that people here want the steam sauna very bad but have we considered the fact that we have a working plumbing on every single floor? I don’t know. Something to be grateful for

I went to this gym for a few years, they had a great deal for going during off hours. I loved my routine and the machines here. It was generally not too crowded. Not the cleanest or dirtiest gym. Lots of natural light.
However, since I started going, they did renovations that took away one of the women’s locker rooms and the remaining women’s locker room consequently felt more crowded and smelly. They have dry sauna in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms, but the men’s additionally has a steam sauna.
So if you’re a man you have two locker rooms and a steam sauna, if you’re a woman you get to pay the same price and access to less stuff.
I brought it up to a manager there and he said he would pass it on to the owner, the conversation left me with zero confidence anything would be done about the blatant gender inequity.
Either make the offerings equal, or don’t make women pay as much money! It’s not rocket science.

Good equipment and plenty of it: I rarely have to wait for a squat rack or bench even at peak hours.

But locker rooms and sauna/steam room are often dirty/smelly. For the high price I would expect better quality.

Best for people who live nearby… otherwise go somewhere cheaper or nicer.

5 starts for my personal trainer Lucas.
I truly recommend Lucas, he is really an awesome person and trainer. He knows a lot about what he does, and does it with with a big deal of commitment and generosity with his time and knowledge.
He has the patience to guide you through your progress while focusing in a thorough pre and post workout, which I personally asked for due to injuries in my wrist and shoulder, but never thought it was going to be that good. Thank you Lucas for all you did for me.

They've got all the amenities and equipment you could want. Everything is always clean and neat, and generally there is enough equipment to go around at any given time. I love this gym! The staff are very friendly and accommodating. It is well managed - the equipment is consistently maintained and upgraded.

The gym is broken up into 3 floors. Once you memorize it it's fun to have the variety of atmospheres. There is too much equipment to name it all. Top floor is aerobics, group fitness, treadmills, sled. Main floor are machines, several benches, one squat rack, locker rooms, and best of all, smoothie bar. They have my order memorized at the smoothie bar. How luxurious. It really is great to basically collapse at the smoothie bar after an intense session and be revived by a Capital Fitness Delight. On the lower level is where it gets serious - 3 platforms for Olympic lifts/deadlift, lot's of racks and benches, a few machines, locker room. There are dumbbells on every floor.

There are a variety of folks that come here and it has been great getting to know everyone. My life is better thanks to Capital Fitness.

Great gym to check out!
The downstairs area seems more like a bodybuilding/powerlifting gym and the upstairs level is more like a “regular” gym.
There’s plenty of space + an extra cardio room upstairs and nice Locker rooms with saunas.

This is a copy of the email I received, from management, when I reached out to them to report a very disturbing experience I had with a patron and an employee of theirs.

Other than refunding the latest payment to them, which was automatically withdrawn after my horrible experience there AND after initially requesting to cancel, this is the patronizing tone which their management found appropriate to address harassment of a member inside of their gym and no additional effort was made to address, or even attempt to make up for, my experience with this gym.

Needless to say, I will not be returning, family will be cancelling memberships, and this laughable example of “customer service” may now serve as a warning to all potential future customers.

*Edit: I forgot to mention that this email also came after I was hung up on by the desk staff when I called to request an email to contact regarding my experience and the cancellation of my membership, as the staff on-hand advised me that they could not do this.

Capital has what you need and they know exactly what price they can charge for it ($$$). A notable amount of equipment is jacked up cosmetically but that's not a big deal. Lighting is poor, the smell is distinct, and maintenance issues are frequent. Water fountains, faucets, showers, shower curtains, sauna, loud noises downstairs(?), etc. aren't fixed quickly. Towels are not available for folks to shower. Honestly, if there was a planet fitness nearby I'd consider going there and that's really saying something. It's a convenient gym that gets the job done and is no doubt a gold mine for the owner(s). I applaud them for making the market where supply meets demand. Employees are nice but no doubt underutilized.

I've been working out here for a couple of years now. Since December 2019, I have lost 70 lbs and feel much healthier than I did before. A large part of that is due to the welcoming environment at Capital Fitness - I never felt self-conscious or that other members were judging me, even when I first started working out and struggled to do basic exercises. Capital Fitness was also quick to react to the pandemic. They closed for a little while last year but reopened with effective and convenient protocols. As far as I'm aware, they never had an outbreak and I felt safer going to the gym than I did shopping for groceries. Thanks to their protocols - and the willingness of other members to follow them - I was able to keep working out safely for most of 2020.

Cap Fitness offers great bang-for-the-buck compared to a lot of gyms out there. Equipment is pretty new and well maintained and the facility is clean... not sure what more you're really going to be looking for!

COVID note: Although this should be the case at all gyms, I can confirm that at Cap Fitness, EVERYONE I see is wearing a mask and EVERYONE I see is wiping down their equipment when they get done with it.

They just added a bunch of squat racks, another deadlift space and a ton of new equipment. Great gym

The staff has incredible vision for fitness and wellbeing. They are constantly trying to fill the gym with equipment based on reviews of the customers and that align with the trends of where fitness is headed. This is a great place to workout if you are in Madison for the day or live here permanently.

Capital Fitness is a great facility. I have been going to Capital Fitness for almost 4.5 years now and I have enjoyed it very much. The cliental are great! I've formed many good relationships and developed a strong relationship with the management team and the trainers. I did leave for a short period of time to have a change of scenery but came back shortly after because I felt that Capital Fitness was a better fit for me. Yes, there are areas to improve, but the staff is great and the equipment is well kept. I recommend Capital Fitness to anyone! Do the 7 day trail, take a group workout class and see how you like it. Would also recommend checking out the spa above too.

This is my first review ever and I am leaving this review because I was really upset by the front desk and believe there are improvements that can be done. Today after checking in I went to women’s locker room only to found out that I left something in my car. When I came back I forgot to check in because the scanner is very far away. To my surprise, I was chased by the front desk when I was trying to change in the locker room and it was super embarrassing. I would recommend the gym owner to set up a check in desk that is more convenient (on first floor) and stop embarrassing your customer when they are trying to change!

Good gym, somewhat expensive, I left because I needed a gym with basketball courts.

But, they have a 30 day cancellation policy which is rather ridiculous. I tried to cancel, but they told me they'd "have" to bill me later that week for the next month. It's not like I was cancelling mid month. They just needed to squeeze one more month's amount of money from me.

I was a member here for over a decade. I primarily kept my membership solely for the central location and group classes. However the equipment is old, the gym is always dirty, there is a steady ceiling leak of water in the group fitness room (!), and they have just terrible customer service with the constant turnover of managers. The group class offerings has declined too. Would not recommend.

Used to be a great value until the recent decision to axe HALF of all yoga and fitness classes offered. Before signing up you may want to confirm that they don't plan to remove half the fitness equiptment during your membership too.

The equipment at this gym is fairly old. It is typically clean. Nearly every class I have been to has had a great instructor. However, they have decided to SLASH 40% of all classes this summer when people want to get in shape! Numerous members have emailed management, and the instructors are upset to lose their livelihood. This is a big part of why we pay for fitness centers like this instead of Planet Fitness. Hopefully they change their mind about cutting classes so drastically.

If you live in the Capital/Downtown area, this is your gym. Spacious, clean facilities with well maintained equipment. The staff and trainers are great. As far as what they offer for services, gym/spa/classes---------------------------------------------------------
***REVISION: Recently changed management, not what it was as far as quality in my opinion. Not to say services aren't what they were, just an overall drop in cleaning/staff/gym store etc. Stopped going about 6 months ago because the mens downstairs locker-room smelled so terrible by the weekend. 😕

Capital Fitness is a great gym, especially for classes! I go to the cycling, fitness, yoga and pilates classes and they are all great - I love the variety that is available. The instructors are very friendly, each has their own style so you can find what fits you best. The yoga studio provides a welcoming environment for all skill levels. I highly recommend this gym.

I have had nothing but great experiences at Capital Fitness/The Yoga Sangha. As a gym facility, it has a wide variety of what just about anyone would need for a solid workout. As a yoga studio, I found it to be the best in Madison! There is a wide variety of styles and teachers for any student. It is a great balance to have both offerings under one roof. The price? Unbeatable! I am going to miss it!

Only one of the two restrooms is actually usable. The one downstairs I'm pretty sure has something growing in it. Don't buy the whole 2 gyms for 1 cost because their West Washington location is basically a "hyped" up hotel gym. Weights are super un-organized and 35's are just kinda left lying around cause nobody knows where to put them. They only have one of each machine which is awesome during rush hour when it's packed after 5 and you can never do your exercises cause there's no other machine that works the same muscle group. You also pay $55 a month for a gym that closes at 9pm 3 days out of the week so that's pretty sweet. And if you do decide to become a member there's a $150 fee if you want to cancel, and you can only do that after 50% of your yearly contract has already been paid for.

Honestly, a snap fitness or an anytime fitness has the exact same equipment as this gym I don't think the $55 a month is worth it for the amount of time it's open.

Convenient location and hours, great yoga schedule, and clean facilities. A membership gives you unlimited access to group classes. I was looking for a gym where I could come for yoga and working out on machines, and it's been perfect for that. Macpherson Worobec's yoga classes are transformative!

Employees there were terrible. I experienced a person around me did not wipe out after using equipment and I told one of there employees. Guess what happened? That person still did not wipe at all next day and never ever after. Also, their wash clothes are terribly dirty.
When my contract was done, about a week later, they charged me a locker room fee and I complained. Guess what happened? they never said sorry and just kept saying their excuses. Just keep in mind, they will keep your credit card information, even though your contract is done.
Basically, I have no desire to recommend this place to be a good place to work out to anybody.

I use Capital Fitness mostly for the yoga classes, which I really enjoy. I only wish there were more of them and that the teachers corrected students' poses more. It is rare that a teacher corrects my poses, and I always wonder if I'm doing it right.

Aside from that, the yoga studios are beautiful, and I really enjoy the gym in general. I've also taken group fitness classes that I enjoy.

I enjoy working out at capital fitness. They offer great yoga classes with wonderful teachers, offering various styles and backgrounds. They also respond to customer feedback. For example, I had requested that capital consider adding a dance fitness class called Werq to group classes and the management took that feedback and hired a great instructor, which makes my Friday workouts fun and is something to look forward to.

It's a solidly mediocre gym, if you are used to a larger city and wider selection of offerings. It seems to be good for what Madison has to offer.

The group fitness classes are very hit or miss - VERY hit or miss although they seem to have a solid core following. Some are taught by people who seem to have limited awareness of either the sport they are simulating or strength and body types. But some are really good.

In terms of equipment, the gym has what you would basically need.

The yoga classes are absolutely top notch for the most part and worth the price of membership.

The parking is simply ridiculous. You should not charge for a membership and parking on top of it. Also, the locker rooms are dated and the hairdryers and lockers often don't work well.

I have been a member for about a year now and have little to no complaints. Living on both sides of the capital, I have attended both locations regularly and would recommend the Butler location for its size and classes, but the west is equally nice if you are looking to get in a cardio or weight workout. Besides January/February, this gym is never over crowded and there is always space in classes. The gyms are always clean, organized, and machines are repaired quickly if they brake down. Having 2 weight rooms, 2 floors of cardio, 3 yoga studios, cycling classes, and fitness group classes for the price of membership is the best you will find downtown. They offer student, epic, and health insurance discounts as well. Most of the members are of the young professional/grad student age so I found making gym friends extremely easy as well if community is important to you.

Elevated Gym experience- the staff is friendly and professional. If you want to take a class - they definitely have one to suit your needs...there really is so much to choose from. But I was truly impressed after I injured my knee during a race and my doctor recommended that I strengthen my core and maybe work with a trainer. That's when I met Pete Brown and started my journey toward learning how to mindfully train my body. If your looking for an intelligent trainer who will treat you as an individual and listen to your needs Capital Fitness is the gym for you. I've been a member for a couple of years now and the appeal is still there. Oh and for you runners out there - if you have to get on a treadmill, the views from the second floor are pretty beautiful!

I've been a member of Cap Fitness on and off since they opened. These days I keep re-upping my membership for the Yoga Sangha. There are some really excellent teachers and with a monthly membership, the per class cost is lower than any other yoga studio I know of, which makes it possible for me to take multiple classes each week. And it's wonderful to still have the option of taking other exercise classes, using the ellipticals, or using the sauna, if I want. The facilities and equipment are also regularly updated, maintained, and cleaned. Thanks Cap Fitness!

Great fitness center. Yoga Sangha adds so much to the experience. I almost exclusively use my membership to go to yoga classes. The schedule is packed with great classes by amazing yoga teachers. This feature alone is worth the membership fee. Most other yoga studios charged way more for a month membership. You get the best yoga classes plus all the fitness center benefits.

I've been attending classes at the Yoga Sangha for the past few months. If you buy a membership, this place is easily the best yoga deal in town right now at roughly half the cost of the nearest competitor, while offering a complimentary gym membership too. I even started lifting weights once a week, again.

There's really a wide variety of classes: a regular class for beginners, power flow, vinyasa, yin and alignment.

I've been a member at this gym for about a year now, and am not a fan. If it wasn't for my friends I would have stayed at Princeton Club. They have more locations, more equipment, better hours, and free parking at all hours of the day. They pretty much cost the same, but you get way less at capital fitness, and its more of a hassel. If you want to work out during the day you have to pay extra for parking which is annoying because I feel like I already pay enough to work out there. Also working out on the weekend can be difficult because they limit their hours even more. If you are deciding between Princeton Club, and Capital fitness like I was I would pay the extra $10 a month, because its well worth it.
