As an adult dancer trying to get back into it, everything started out great at their water street location.
The instructor definitely knew her material and the music choice was awesome, but sometimes the class seemed a bit fast paced/complex and there was a lot of rehashing the previous classes dance moves (which could be good or bad depending on how you view it). Basically, good luck trying to remember the routines unless you have a GoPro strapped to your head.
And then suddenly there was less than a week notice and they were moving buildings to a shared location into the Milwaukee Youth Art Center. So in addition to Milwaukee traffic, you have to park/walk to a somewhat questionable area near where the old Milwaukee LGBT center used to be. I'll be 100% honest, this really isn't a place where I would want to be walking home at 7 PM when class gets out unless I have a G18 on me. Trust me sit there and watch the traffic that goes by for an hour after dark. For example, there is a full time parking lot security guard idling in his suburban which is usually not a good sign. (sleeping though!) And I definitely did not see "more parking space" because the parking lot is shared by all the other youth programs happening in that building. There was maybe ONE open spot and I got there early. So traffic, chore-like routines, and somewhat interesting location choice and it was a reluctant no from me after the last meet date. That's just more than I can tolerate and I ended up walking away with a pained grimace on my face. Super disheartening and I'll have to teach myself or find a decent adult hip hop class, which is arguably super hard to do in the area.

As a recent college graduate, Danceworks has been an absolute gift. I was looking for a way to reconnect with my love of musical theatre dance, and what I found was so much more — a welcoming, and inspiring community. The classes are fun, challenging, and full of positive energy, and the support from fellow dancers is incredible.
I love taking musical theatre dance with Crystal, in particular. Her passion, encouragement, and joy make every class something I look forward to.
Whether you're rediscovering dance or just starting out, I can't recommend this place enough!

My daughter has been taking classes here for 2 years and we enjoy it. I love that they are a non-profit, the environment is positive, and the Water Street location is nice for parents to have places to go while their kids are in class (groceries, coffee shops, walk along the river, etc).

I can’t say enough good things about this dance studio! After dancing all throughout my childhood, I spent about 15 years missing that part of my life and struggling to find a place where I could casually return to dance—but still be challenged and inspired. Most options I came across were either super intense or more fitness-based, like Zumba, which just didn’t scratch the itch for actual choreography.
Then I found this studio—and I only wish I had discovered it sooner! The classes are fun, welcoming, and offer real choreography that makes you feel like a dancer again, no matter how long it’s been. The instructors are talented, supportive, and passionate about what they do, and the energy in the room is so uplifting. Whether you’re just getting back into it or dancing for the first time, this place makes you feel right at home.
If you’re an adult looking for a place to move, express yourself, and reconnect with your love for dance, this is the place. I’m so grateful to have found it!

There’s just so much to share about this magical place. I will try to be succinct.
All the classes here are incredible! Anyone and everyone can find the style and level that fits them. The instruction here is of the highest caliber.
The performances by the dance companies are expert and a joy to behold.
There are even opportunities for non professional movers of all ages to perform!
As the official extended family of my family since 2002 I highly recommend Danceworks to one and all!

I was looking for somewhere to dance without having to make a commitment or spend a chunk of money, and I am so so pleased to have found Danceworks. Their schedule of classes is broad in style and level. I started going to Beginners Hip Hop and then to Intermediate for more of a challenge. Gabi instructed both classes and she is kind, helpful, encouraging, and very talented at dance. I definitely would recommend going if you’ve been curious. Start with a beginner’s class and it’s likely you won’t be the only one there who is brand new 😊

I’ve been taking dance classes at Danceworks for years and it is always a place I look forward to going. I especially love the new adult classes they’ve been offering, and how they really are paying attention to what people are looking for and adapting their class selection to that. I particularly love Christal and David’s Musical Theatre dance classes on Mondays. They are GREAT for technique and audition practice.

Jacqui provided choreography for our wedding dance on 10/5/2024. She was so positive and just the person we needed to help make a great experience for our first dance. Having someone choreograph and give us confidence in dancing was so wonderful and we really are thankful. Everyone at Danceworks, too, had positive energy and helpful communication during our lessons.

I absolutely love Danceworks, but if I could make one critique it would be that their Contemporary classes are Modern Dance classes. It bothers me that they list their Modern dance class as Contemporary. I was disappointed when I signed up to take a contemporary class and the entire Intermediate Class was based on Modern Dance technique. What I did love was it brought me back to when I was in College for Modern Dance. I understand that it’s essential to learn where it all started and stemmed from, but I wish I knew ahead of time what I was signing up for. I’m still looking for an actual Contemporary class to take as I feel like I didn’t get what I was hoping for.

I’ve never danced before but have always wanted to. I was a little nervous to call and find out information as an adult who has no experience. I spoke with Daniel on the phone who enthusiastically explained all I needed to know (and then some) about Danceworks. He even suggested the 50+ classes which are very beginner - something I would have never thought of. Thanks so much Daniel! Love the passion!!

As I am into singing and dance, my kathak friend who is a kathak artistic director introduced me to Danceworks. a vibrant dance studio located in heart of milwaukee downtown.
As i am relatively new to other non Bollywood dance forms, I was eager to explore the magic of movements, workouts and rhythms. Overall welcoming atmosphere, the expertise of the instructors, and the exhilarating dance class I attended is just amazing.
This place is definitely the best place for kids to learn and grow in dance art form. Highly recommended place and good wishes to the team

Pros: Danceworks Milwaukee is a unique organization located on the lower east side. I'm happy to have served the community here while teaching beginners ballet classes. They serve a faint demographic of intergenerational movers and offer daily classes, programming, and performances to the general public! Classes are low in the usual market price throughout the city. However, they offer quite a few commercial, classical, and cultural style classes. Plus I heard your 1st one is free!
Cons: Diversity is something that troubles a lot of dance studios in America today and DanceWorks is no exception. Although they work to increase their diverse population I’ve seen a huge developmental decrease in diversity, inclusion, and equity practices here.

Great studio. I have taken classes here in the past. I wish that they offered more in person classes. I got all the way to the studio only to find out that the class was only offered online. Really disappointed. =/

Great place! Went for thier Saturday Kpop workshop and had an absolute blast. I'm an out of shape non dancer taking my first baby steps into it all and the instructor was so nice. The class was super low pressure with an emphasis on having fun and enjoying the dance. Would definitely recommend👍

I went to a DanceLab Performance last night and had a great time! Going to their performance was a good way to see some beautiful and fun pieces without paying the price of a professional show. DanceLab features emerging and established choreographers' pieces from all different genres of dance. Not many places you can see Irish Tap Dance alongside, Indian Folk Dance, Ballet, and Hip Hop. A fabulous experience, highly recommend this well kept secret!

Danceworks is one of the most life-changing places I've ever been. Their professional productions are amazing, the classes are fantastic and varied, and the staff are so friendly. I love the variety of classes they have and the occasional day of free classes so adults and kids alike can try something new and see what suits them. Danceworks has so many opportunities for children, teens, and young adults who are interested in dance, and the resources to keep that love going for adults!

This place was a place we wanted to sign our daughter up in. She's 2 1/2 and we were going in for a trial class to see how she liked it and if she did we were going to sign up directly afterwards. We got in and signed the waiver and the woman seemed happy to see that we were in for a trial. We went to change and as soon as we came out she stopped us before walking into the class that there are no more available spots left. I don't think she knew what she was talking about and we called three times before the trial class..twice last week and LASTNIGHT around 530pm and all three times we were encouraged to join the class. This place is unprofessional and very disappointing. I've started to search for classes elsewhere and the Academy of Performing Arts was sympathetic to hear of their incapability to deliver to their word and we will be JOINING there instead. Don't be fooled be their words over the phone, they're unsure how to handle new customers and how to make them happy. 👎
