Darian is fantastic. As a mom who has a multi sport athlete that sees Darian, the importance of not only physical strength: correct positions, lifting appropriate weights, etc. but the mental strength will far out last the physical. Darian is an amazing personal trainer. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I knew what I wanted. A trainer who knew his stuff and practiced what he preached but also who was able to teach me about the science behind strength training. Also someone who would push me to do more than I would do on my own. Darian exceeded my expectations in every area. Not only have I gotten stronger and lost a few dress sizes but I have learned so much from him. As a health care worker and former Personal Trainer myself I can say with confidence that Darian has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to training the body. Darian is awesome person and a dedicated trainer. He generally cares about your well being and your outcome of reaching your goals. He motivates you and help you stay on track, he is very knowledgeable in dieting and weight lifting training. Darian Doan was my personal trainer at 212 Fitness in Stevens Point from mid-September of 2023 until mid-March of 2024. While I have been relatively physically active all of my life, last fall, as I was about to turn 77, I noticed my stamina and strength were decreasing. At the advice of my wife, who has had a personal trainer for many years, and with the approval of my primary medical provider, I set about slowing the effects of aging with twice a week weight and resistance training. Darian was relatively new on the staff at 212 Fitness, and was likely the person with the most available time, so I was assigned to him. It was a very good match! Although we differ in age by several generations, we discovered that we have common interests. Since Darian has an open personality and converses easily, a friendship developed, as well as a trainer-trainee relationship.

Of course, training is the reason I was seeing him, and is my most important reason for writing this letter. As a trainer, Darian is very well informed and knows a lot about how the body works, and about medicine in general, given his background as an army medic. He was able to know quite well what I needed to do to address both my current abilities and my body’s needs. Darian was very encouraging and rewarding of my efforts. In each set of exercises, by the second or third repetition, I was beginning to wonder if I was going to “make it” through to the end of the set. Darian was superb at knowing just when to start encouraging me and to let me know how many repetitions I had left, and he gradually increased the difficulty of the workout to respond to increases in my abilities. We also used a wide variety of machines/techniques, so the workouts were never boring. He was able to keep me going when I think, in other situations, especially without his encouragement, I would have just given up.

In all of our work together, there was only one time when I experienced an injury that could have affected my program, and that was entirely my fault. Describing it allows me to report more specifically on another of Darian’s strengths. I have worn orthotics, (a pair in my daily shoes and a pair in my work boots), since I was in my 40s. About eight years ago, when I got a new hip, I did a lot of walking as therapy and bought a pair of walking shoes, (AKA sneakers). For some unknown reason, I never switched orthotics between my daily wear shoes and my walking sneakers, and that didn’t seem to cause a problem during the walking I did to “break in” my new hip. However, when I began training with Darian, I also neglected to put the orthotics in the sneakers, and did my twice-weekly half hour workouts with him without them. One of the activities he had for me was pulling a sled with weights, and especially when I was pulling it behind me, I was bent way forward driving my legs, and putting a lot of weight on the front of my feet. After a month or so, I noticed my feet, but particularly my left big toe and arch, were sore, and realized I should’ve been wearing the orthotics during my training. I told Darian about it and he immediately adapted my training program to protect my feet. My wearing the orthotics, and the change in program that Darian made in response, resolved the pain. Had I been wearing them all along I doubt if there would have been any injury at all.

I spent my career as a psychologist, the last 25 years of which I taught undergraduate psychology courses at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. Based on my six months of experience with Darian, I would recommend him for almost any job which involves working closely with people. Based on his personal background and experience, I think he is especially well-qualified to work in the area of physical training and rehabilitation, which is how I got to know him.
