I liked the facility very much. Due to physical limitations, water classes are best for me, and they offer lots of options. I just wish the instructors would teach from the deck, and not in the water.

The YMCA continues to make great decisions and gives the community a great resource. This south Eau Claire location is a really clean and open club
Pool and hot tub are awesome
Everything is always clean and the staff is helpful and friendly

It's only a few minutes from my mom's house, hopefully I can get her off the couch and back on the rowing machine soon

My husband and I booked a Spin Class on the app. for a date day. Showed up a few minutes early and there weren’t any bikes left. The instructor told us that we had to be there 5 minutes early or our reservation was voided. I had specifically asked the week prior if we needed to show up early and was told no. It is not posted anywhere that you need to show up early. Super frustrating to rearrange your workout schedule, have outside childcare and show up for a planned workout to not be able to participate it. If reservations are needed then others should start planning better to reserve instead of those who did miss out. Beyond disappointing and frustrating.

It’s hard to recommend this gym anymore for strength training. Since the Y took over, it’s been a many-month process of them rearranging weight equipment, and then rearranging again, and then rearranging again. Each time a worse arrangement than the last. And the recent removal of a squat rack and deadlift platforms makes it even harder to get a good workout in when the gym is even halfway busy. I’d hoped the price increase that came along with the Y would’ve meant more than some replaced bench pads, but that’s not the case so far. Really disappointed.

It’s so innovative that they turned an entire gym into a social media viewing lounge! All the equipment that used to make people healthier now can help teenagers relax and scroll comfortably. The thumb workouts here are incredible!

So overcrowded, tons of teenagers and kids getting in the way of adults trying to actually work out. Parents don’t actually watch their kids and let them play on equipment; staff does nothing about it. The locker rooms are always very wet and dirty.
Sometimes it smells so bad in there that I have to leave early.
There is a small lifting room that used to be for women only and now they allow men in there and the absolute creepiest men will sit in there and stare at the women. It’s so uncomfortable.

Today was my first experience at the South YMCA It was fantastic! I was greeted with a smile and shown where to attend my YOGA class with Barbara Blum. This class is starting me on a path of healing after a knee replacement. Barbara is an amazing instructor that combines superlative knowledge with a gentle guiding personality to create the perfect learning class. Thank you YMCA for providing this environment of health!!

The YMCA South has one of the best individuals greeting us for our daily workout. Chloe always has such a cheerful personality that you can't help but walk away with a smile on your face. She has made my workout sessions easier to face each day knowing I get to see her and get that positive boost. A real smile goes a long way. And don't even get me started on her knowledge of the YMCA programs. We need more like Chloe who "care" about us!!

Been working out here ever since it was golds. Was a great place before it switched to the ymca. Never had any staff problems until it became the ymca. Closing staff has been extremely rude and disrespectful to me and my friends. Gym isn’t clean whatsoever. Used to love working out here when it was golds. Ever since it went to ymca it’s gone down hill.

I love lifting at this gym, but closing staff is exceedingly getting ruder and ruder. I've paid for a membership at this gym since it was EC fitness because its a great gym, but anytime me or anyone i know is leaving at 9:00 pm (when gym hours are until 9 pm) we get so much attitude from the closing employees who are STILL working on their closing cleaning tasks. If you don't want to work a closing shift, then change your availability or work a different job.I would understand if we were actually stopping them from leaving or doing their job, but when my ride is in the locker room and im standing in the lobby waiting until 9:01 to walk out the door and the employees are still walking around cleaning, i am certainly not slowing you down at all. I wish the employees would stop taking out their emotions on paying guests, its inappropriate and childish.

Source: Google

Maya Gustafson

β˜… 3

Closing staff is extremely rude. Time hits 9:00 pm and as paying members are about to leave the building, the staff will constantly be rude to them about not leaving earlier. The staff will actively come up to members and remind us to leave, even though the time had just turned to 9pm, and even argue with the members to stand outside if they are waiting for a ride. I understand staff would like to go home but there is many other ways they could speak to the members. Very unprofessional.

This used to be an affordable gym with a pool, which was extraordinary for my chronic back issues. YMCA took over and now it's too expensive to justify in addition to being oriented towards family instead of single adults. Had a nice time before it switched.

They are extremely difficult with memberships , they denied 4 people who tried to become a member at their facility. Honestly the facility is a decent place to get a lift in. (Nothing Special) But they have made it extremely difficult to use the pool and sauna at your convenience! Grown adults should be able to use the sauna area without a lifeguard in the pool... Some of us have work schedules that line up better with weekend sauna sessions. So either get the staff you need for the weekends, let us use the full facilities, or stop charging us so much per month just to limit our use of the facilities in full.

We had gym memberships through gold's in the past. We found out that the YMCA was charging our old account even though we never kept our membership through the ownership change. We called the Y to cancel the charges that they made on our card and were denied rudely.

Can’t wait to transfer gyms. If you are a young female, be prepared for creepy men constantly staring and following you during workouts, no matter what hour of the day. On top of that, people stealing machines and don’t respect personal space. The locker rooms are constantly filled with water after people come in from the pool and young children running around which makes it uncomfortable to get ready for your workout. Highly advise not coming after work as it is too busy to even find one machine.

I used to love the gym. It has become a literal joke since switching to YMCA south. You can’t connect to the Wi-Fi after a certain time because too many kids connected to it. They don’t keep toilet paper stalked in the men’s bathroom so you have to use paper towels if they even have that stalked. Men have been bringing their young daughters in the men’s locker room probably age of 5 or 6, but it’s in their policy you can’t say anything or discriminate against genders going into certain locker rooms, they literally have a family room parents can use. And kids will sit forever on a machine playing on their phone so don’t expect to get to use a machine you want.

Short: Inexpensive, pretty good equipment, can be a little dirty here and there. Overall, it is a big facility that needs new equipment and rearrangement.

I downgraded from three to two stars because this gym needs an update related to my revisions in this review.

There have been "some" improvements to the gym in the last year, but they are fixing the parking lot and re-epoxying the mens lockerroom entrance to the pool.

This gym needs updated equipment and rearrangement. I believe the owner should really consult a serious athlete for what must be updated, fixed or rearranged.

Most of the 45 pound Olympic barbells are broken. The bearings in the heads are broken. When I load 225+ on many of the bars, the weight will shake and roll back and forth, which is not acceptable. You can tell the difference between a proper barbel and a broken one. These are broken. One of the many examples of things not being serviced.

If this gym had sensible rearrangement and invested in some new equipment to attract new customers I ultimately think this gym would be the best in this area. This gym should honestly look at what golds gym in Evans Georgia looks like; that is a proper gym run by a former Olympic athlete that knows what they're doing.

February 2023 review:

Long: Decent gym. Has most of what you need to work out. I first visited this gym in about 2009 and not many of the weight lifting machines have been replaced. I recognize many machines from when I was 12 or 13 (I'm 27 now). It would be nice to see some more modern equipment or renovations to bring this gym up to par with other gyms as this gym is beginning to feel very dated. Multiple pieces of equipment are very early 2000's-ish (some of the old stuff here (like the benches are very good, though!) The right leg press is definitely broken and needs maintenance; I won't use it.

They have the freestanding rig (the big yellow bars in the middle of the gym) set up in the most STUPID way. It's not even serving its intended application and is only taking up space. It is basically a glorified squat / deadlift platform and dumbell rack. No thought was put into having it where it is. If this was my gym, I would arrange this gym entirely differently.

Since I came here regularly in 2014, the doorway from the men's showers to the pool is usually dirty, and it kind of drives me nuts. I won't walk barefooted through there.

This gym is a good place to workout, especially for the price. EC fitness is an amazing canvas and would be a lot nicer if they got new machines, renovated more, and rearranged equipment. I've been to tons of different gyms all over the world. What I can say with reference to that is that this gym is beginning to get behind the curve comparatively. This gym has big potential and could truly be the best gym in the Chippewa Valley if it had a makeover.

Pretty good gym would recommend it. Membership price is good considering all the amenities you get. Equipment is pretty dated but most of it works fine. Some things need to be replaced like the calf raise machine. Definitely need more/new barbell clips as there is frequently a shortage. Would be better if they were open later or became a 24hr key fob entry gym to spread out the amount of people that come as it can get quite busy. Another deadlifting platform would also be a welcomed addition.

BEWARE...NOT CLEAN. I went for a tour today and was abandoned at the lockers. I ask the young man who was showing the place why they had reviews about cleanliness, and he said, "sometimes the staff don't clean the locker room every day."

When I continued the tour by myself, I could not even go into the showers because of the stench.

I walked out to the front desk and there was a young woman who seemed more knowledgeable. I asked what the stench was in the shower and she said "someone had an accident in the showers, but they cleaned it up; 'maybe they should use bleach to cover up the smell'. "

They said they try and clean the machines once a day and rely on members to clean after they use the machines.

OMG, DO NOT ALLOW YOUR LOVED ONES TO WORK OUT THERE, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE OVER 50 YEARS OLD.

I went to a gym very close to this gym who cleans the equipment every 20 minutes.

I am thinking about calling the health department.

I do wish they would extend their hours..i go in the evening during the week and I often find myself rushing to get to the gym so I can workout before they close. Facility is large and has a ton of equipment but it is not kept clean.
Furthermore the locker rooms and showers have had dirty sandy floors for weeks.
Most people do not wipe down machines after they use it even though there are signs up.

There are also many people who take their shoes off while lifting during things such as squats and leg press.
This is absolutely disgusting.

Nice gym, exactly what you'd expect from gold's. Some equipment is a bit old yes, but not like falling apart old. Tons of machines for everything you could possibly want to do. 4 individual squat racks, plus a rig so technically 6. Not a lot of deadlift space, only 2 platforms, one of which shares with one of the 4 racks. Only thing missing from this gym is a GHD / reverse hyper. Staff is friendly and helpful. Can't comment on the trainers though, no experience with them.

For some of the reviews addressing mask usage: it's a gym. Most people don't wear a mask while they're working out (especially the kids, lots of teenagers frequent here after school). It is what it is. If you're uncomfortable with it don't go here. There are signs asking you wear it coming in. Doesn't seem to be strictly enforced, but most customers follow it.. The staff do wear their masks, so good on them for that.

Pros: it’s definitely a gym

Cons: the mask policy is a joke. Even the front desk employee was not wearing her mask. They have signs up, but today my lifting partner and I were the only ones out of 25 people wearing masks. Nobody even had masks! Not in the locker room, not in the lobby, and definitely not in the workout spaces. When I politely asked the employee if she could remind people to use masks between exercises, the reply was β€œthat’s not my job”.

PROS: large space, variety of options to pick from, nice staff, plenty of free parking, childcare on site, first week free on trial basis (to test out the place) which is helpful before signing up.

CONS: 50% or less of people wearing their masks. For example, there is a large sign on the door that says β€œmasks required” - but the front desk staff member wasn’t even wearing a mask. Absolutely no enforcement of this across the gym. That was super disappointing to see. Also, the gym had a weird smell to it. The equipment is old. The spin bikes are low key dangerous to ride because they’ve been used too much. And lastly, the locker room straight up smells bad. It smelt like old sweaty clothes and mildew/mold. I could smell is easily through my mask. Definitely agree with the other review on the smell thing. It’s rough.

I love the variety here! This place is top of line for its price and options. People, multiple gyms with weights, courts, and a pool! You can't beat it, definitely my favorite spot in this town so far. If you go tell them I referred pretty please ;)

Expensive, no towel service unless you pay extra, kinda dirty, kinda smelly. Maybe the biggest gym in the chippewa valley with pool, hot tub, and sauna

The place has a good selection of workout equipment the prices are kind of high to join they need to offer better passes so people can see it.

I really enjoy going to Golds! They have a large space so there never is a cramped or congested feeling. The equipment is nice and they have a little bit of everything so it's easy to change workout routines. There is a nice basketball court, nice pool, various classes offered, showers, sauna, tanning, do I need to keep going? I recomend checking it out!

I use to love going here, until a now! I was getting charged $10 a month (which was awesome) and then all of a sudden I start getting charged $35 (okay still not bad for a gym membership), looked at my CC statement and now I’m getting charged $54! I know this may not be a big deal to some people but if you going to do that to people at least have the decency to send emails out, send letters, or even call! I had no idea why my payments where jumping like that at all! So then I called to see if I can cancel my membership not only do you have to give them a month notice you have to go there in person to sign a damn form saying you wish to cancel your membership! And if you move you have to send a damn letter and then your membership gets canceled the day they receive the letter! I’m sorry, but that is such an convince to people!
