I started personal training here because I wanted to work out in a more traditional way instead of following YouTube videos that weren’t giving me results. Tyler focuses on building a sustainable, active lifestyle instead of chasing the “Insta-fit” look. That really helped me shift my focus from appearance to strength and what my body can actually do. I’ve also learned proper form, so I finally feel confident doing workouts on my own and am excited to keep getting stronger. Tyler not only taught me the right techniques but also changed how I see fitness. Highly recommend him if you want to improve your quality of life through exercise!

Tyler honest to goodness changed my life. In ten sessions with him, I went from being completely dependent on others (i.e. group fitness, trainers, etc) to being a confident improvisational and independent exerciser. This is a big deal for me and means that I now exercise most days, regardless of whether I have time to make it to a gym or class. I am stronger and more mindful of my body as a result of working with Tyler, as well as more certain that I will remain in a reasonable and enjoyable relationship with exercise the rest of my life.

I was Tyler’s first virtual hypnosis client. This was my first time with hypnosis and it was such a positive experience. Tyler made the experience comfortable and genuine. He is skilled and articulate at what he does. I still practice what I learned from him in our virtual session- four years later!

Tyler has been my personal trainer for nearly a year, including multiple extensions, meeting 2-3 per week. I'm 60 and he is providing me with training to improve my strength and overall fitness. I really like Tyler's approach, which is about results (not drama). One-on-one at a scheduled time is what works best for me. He provides excellent training, solid fitness advice and welcome encouragement. He's flexible on scheduling and schedule changes. Tyler is a pro and our work together is producing excellent results. -Paul

I recently finished a 20 session work out program with Tyler that went far above my expectations and transformed my fitness journey and mindset. Initially, my goal was to find a quick fix to my lack of strength after a surgery and my overall lack of fitness throughout life, but my mindset quickly changed. I never thought I would be someone who actually enjoyed working out. I have never participated in sports and have actively avoided working out unless I was desperate to lose weight, but now I enjoy going to the gym 4-5 days a week. Tyler’s program transformed working out for me from a necessary evil to part of my self care routine. I now find peace in my workouts and look forward to going to the gym even on my own. I am stronger, more composed, have better posture, and an overall better mindset since starting this program. I cannot recommend Focal Point enough.

I couldn’t be happier with the excellent 20-session program that I recently completed with Focal Point Training owner Tyler Smith in his private gym (where he and I were alone together). His concept of a “good enough workout” was a perfect fit for this 74-year-old male who had three goals: improving upper body strength, posture and balance.

At each session, 3 times per week, we’d develop a personalized workout focused on these goals, and based on how I was feeling that day re: energy level and interests (i.e., which muscle groups I wanted to work). We’d choose a total of 6 exercises for each session from Tyler’s vast knowledge base, and I’d do 3 sets of each one over a 1-hour period. We had no predetermined QUANTITATIVE targets for # of reps per set, and simply used Tyler's guiding QUALITATIVE principle of stopping after I’d done enough good work, i.e., quitting while I was ahead and avoiding the risk of an injury that would set me back.

After 20 sessions, I had made significant progress toward each of my goals and, most importantly, now have the motivation to continue working out three times per week, at a gym in my neighborhood, and creating my own “good enough workout” each time. Tyler and Focal Point have earned my highest possible rating!

I have been active in sports/fitness my whole life (climbing trees, riding horses, high school/college sports, juggling professional life with consistent workouts, motherhood, and now the-yikes-early 50s). I can not recommend Focal Point enough, especially for those like me who have often felt like just a cog in the "traditional" American fitness industry. After suffering a permanent foot injury at a highly-touted fitness "bootcamp" 5 years ago, I lost my ability to do the things I'd always loved: running, backcountry hiking, impact aerobic training, and to a great degree even yoga. Add to that being a mom of 4, entering her 50s, and hey just for fun? A pandemic! Weight gain, frustration over my injury, pandemic stasis. Finally, out of that familiar mix of guilt combined with a longing to be strong and fit again, I searched for a new place that might acknowledge my goals without discounting my personal motivations, life-wisdom, and desire to stay healthy for myself and family. FTW! Focal Point and Tyler welcomed me to get started again from where I was, not where another fitness program might decide I "should be. In just 5 months I have built strength, balance, confidence, and optimism. My workouts are strength-training, meditation, me-time, sustainable progress. That's the key: sustainable. If you've been chewed up and spit out by a cookie-cutter American gym, or if you've never done strength training but want to stay youthful and strong, check out this more constructive, supportive, sustainable, and fun fitness philosophy.

*Side note: first session free, no contracts: wow how refreshing.

Tyler's helped me transform my approach to health and exercise. I have worked out with other trainers in the past that encouraged an "no pain, no gain" mentality. Eventually my willingness to endure painful experiences ended and I would quit.

Tyler's approach is concentrated on the positive; "no pain, no pain." He challenged me to think of this as a multi-year exploration of the physical and mental benefits of exercise. He redirected my focus. I now value the experience of exercise instead of the results. It has made a ton of difference for me. I know I'm in good hands.

When I first met Tyler at Focal Point Training, I hadn't lifted one weight at the gym for fear of hurting myself and looking like an @ss. 11 sessions later (1 free session and 10 paid sessions) I now go to the gym by myself and lift several times a week with 100% confidence. Tyler meets you right where you are at. He is an excellent communicator and motivator. As far as the cost of the 10 sessions, I see it as a one time investment for a lifetime of healthy returns. The first session is free and is a legit session to give you an idea of what you are getting. This was a 10* experience!

I have had great experiences with the one on one training at the gym. Tyler is great with communication and helping you to learn how to do work outs that are easy, effective, and safe. It is a very comfortable environment and I would and have recommended this facility to many people. Tyler's philosophy on working out to feel good and healthy is one that I totally agree with. Also, he clearly cares about about every person that comes in.

If you are thinking about finding a personal trainer or a better work out routine definitely come here!

I have been training with Tyler at Focal Point Training for a few months now and have never felt more confident about achieving my fitness goals than I do now! Tyler’s one-on-one approach focusing on simple exercises with basic equipment, paired with a “good enough”/“quit while you are ahead” philosophy, has me feeling safe, secure, strong, and confident - not only in the changes I am seeing to my body, but in my ability to take what I learn with him and do my own effective workouts at home. I would highly recommend him to help you make easy, lasting, and effective changes to your fitness routine.

My fiancé and I were just looking for something to "get back into the swing of things" and we found this at Focal Point after a friend recommended it to us. We met with Tyler who explained the program and then we received some 1x1 great training. The program is arranged specifically for your fitness level, so they have clients all over the spectrum. This made me feel a bit more comfortable coming in, because we had been out of the workout routines for so long. What was nice about this is that there was no heavy sweating, feeling nauseated after, or feeling pain for days on end, but it was completely effective. We could see ourselves changing for the better and creating healthier habits for ourselves. We highly recommend Focal Point , their trainers and system. Personally, I will always take this program anytime over any extreme fitness program/boot camps--they aren't worth it after finding Focal Point.

I started working with Tyler because I hadn't been active for many years and age was starting to catch up with me. Tyler's approach helped me to learn how to get back into shape without the dread and pain of the gym with typical trainers.

I had my free introductory session with Tyler today. The space is bigger than it looks but that not why I gave it 5 stars.

I connect with Tyler’s philosophy on personal training. I like his “quit while you are ahead” idea and his holistic approach to feeling good and looking good. I’ve seen people pushing themselves without understand why they are doing so. While this is not a gym, at least not until they expand and they have plans to do that, this is a great place to start learning about how to take care of oneself, not be judged, and feeling and eating good. Oh wait, there’s no food served here but it is right next to “the Curve”.

What I like best about focal point training is Tyler’s personality and attitude. Super friendly, enthusiastic and willingness to work with individuals to meet personal goals. Besides being a certified personal trainer, Tyler is also certified in hypnosis to help his clients achieve their goals after a training session. I really connect with his methodology of creating a program for the individual to make exercising sustainable and fun.

Package starts out with 10 sessions to learn (and do) how to feel where you need to be and how you can make progress on your own after the sessions or sign up for individual sessions with Tyler after that.

If anyone is looking for a personal trainer, I would recommend Tyler.

Super workouts put to your mojo. I have worked with other personal trainers before in Madison and other places I have lived and the trainer are the only one who made a program from me, they didn't expect me to do their workout or what they have everyone else do. This is why I personally believe you need to use private personal trainers to start with, they design your workouts to fit you and grow with you. Personal training done right and good fun at the same time. Call Tyler and you will see you want to work with him after the first conversation. So motivating and so uplifting.
