I visited this studio during a trip to the Madison area and it was a great experience from beginning to end. The studio owner, Kat, was very accommodating and helped me quickly settle into my first Mysore class away from my home studio in another state. The studio itself is clean, cozy, and peaceful. Practitioners in the class were friendly and welcoming. I look forward to getting back to Mala Yoga Center!

Stay far away from Kat and Mala Yoga, just as her best staff members have decided to do recently. Our personal experience was with her kids summer camp and after school program. I must say that it started well enough, then there seemed to be a mass exodus of her best employees and then after that Kat always seemed to overly stressed and tired anytime we would see her. Strange behavior for a yoga teacher, in my opinion. Then, abruptly and without warning, she terminated our child’s enrollment from her after school program one day after we had to put down our family dog, which she was aware of because we shared that with her thinking that she was a friend. She refused to give us any details as to why, simply stating that our kid “failed to adjust to the program in a reasonable amount of time”. We later learned from other people that the reason was due to an incident involving another kid at camp where she and my kid were writing and drawing inappropriate things. Which we as parents would have appreciated hearing from her directly so that we could address it as parents, you know, like how a normal childcare provider would handle it. Instead Kat decided to speak to everyone’s parents involved except us and the kick out my 8 year old child instead of using it as a teachable moment, or even getting our kids perspective on the matter. And no, the other kid involved was not kicked out. This was hurtful because not even a week before, kat told us they “loved having our daughter there” and we had never gotten any negative feedback about her before. I share this with any parents to let you know that Kat is ill-equipped to look after and deal with young children. To that end, I feel like it is also worth mentioning that there was another incident where the kids and staff went outside to play, and kat left an unattended candle burning in the building that started a small fire that was scary enough for my daughter to cry when they returned and discovered it. We gave Kat the benefit of the doubt at that time, but knowing what I know now, I don’t think anyone reading this should take their kids to this place. If the price seems too good to be true, it’s because it is.

Edit: let it be known that despite what she’s trying to imply with her response, Kat also did not discuss this with us privately. Don’t let her or her personal friends posting reviews here fool ya.

I am a newbie to yoga at age 77. I read about the health benefits and thought it would help me stay active, but couldn't get into YouTube videos. When Mala Yoga came to Monona, I sampled a few classes and liked each one. Interestingly, while in a class I sometimes thought "this is too hard for me", and "I can't do this". But the instructors all said, "if it hurts, back off, do what you can". And in every case, the next day I felt renewed, stronger, and wanting more. Mala yoga has a great variety of small classes with excellent instructors who'll watch out for you. I highly recommend them.

Our daughter attended the after school program at Mala Yoga Center for five years and has attended the summer day camp. During the pandemic school closures, she also attended the virtual learning support program. Mala has been like a second home to her throughout her elementary school years. We will be forever grateful for Kat, her family, and her staff for the positive, nurturing environment they have provided for our daughter and for all of the wonderful relationships she has developed with the kids and adults at Mala over the years.

Our daughter starting attending the after school program at Mala Yoga and absolutely loves it! She has found a love of yoga and shows us different poses she's learned when she's at home. She also loves her teachers there and they have helped her work through some big emotions she has had this year. She is able to use some of the tools and strategies she has learned there to help her at other times as well. She made new friends there that she looks forward to seeing every day. We have been so happy with the Mala after school program and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for after school care.

Ms Kat and team have given my child a home for her to go to after school. It is a fun and supportive environment that encourages positive connections and a sense of a close community. In addition, with the yoga and mindset work she has done with Mala, she has learned so many amazing skills to support her social-emotional growth! We love Mala and highly recommend it.

Mala Yoga Center is a welcoming and inclusive community with a variety of yoga offerings including ashtanga, alignment, kundalini, vinyasa, flow, and yin; as well as classes and programs for children, pregnant women, veterans, LGBTQ+ and BIPOC, and individuals recovering from substance use disorders. Everyone has a place here and everyone's personal goals are honored, from fitness, flexibility, and strength-building; to social, creative, and mental wellbeing; to respite, refuge, and recovery.

The studio hosts special events for mind, body, and spirit, such as sound healing baths, Ashtanga Authorized-Instructor Retreats, community Satsang, technique workshops, meditation opportunities, and fundraising events for local and global causes.

My personal experience with Mala is through the introduction to Ashtanga practice with owner, Kat. This discipline of awareness of breath, movement, and gaze, is always available. Showing up on the yoga mat is not only a place that can bring you into the present moment and allow you to restore from life's daily challenges, but it also uncovers what is off the mat and helps you bring your practice into your every day. This practice has transformed my life.

I have taken prenatal with Kat for both of my pregnancies at Mala Yoga Center. The community that Kat has built for mommas is exceptional. The guidance we receive in her practices have made both of my birth experiences much easier and much more prepared than I would have otherwise been. Not only do you physically prepare yourself for birth, but the sharing of weekly pregnancy check in experiences and camaraderie that she builds were invaluable to processing and enjoying both of my pregnancies to the fullest. I can’t recommend this prenatal class enough! It’s more than yoga, it’s a momma bonding experience!

A quality yoga shala with something for every body. Ashtanga, Yin/restorative, meditation, unique and special events...as well as quality teachers.

The owner, Kat, has placed thought and intention into every aspect of the yoga shala. Community service and special support for the vulnerable populations is a recurring theme, including for those struggling with addiction, and veterans. Yoga gives back!

The teachers here are some of the loveliest human beings you could ever hope to meet! I always feel welcome and comfortable here. The space is quant with thoughtful touches that make it feel homey. There’s a great variety of classes for all interests and abilities, as well as weekend workshops in Ayurveda, Vedic astrology, deepening yogic practice, etc. I like how feedback is always sought and considered; this place has a lot of heart and it shows. <3

Monona Yoga is the only studio space in Madison open for the Mysore style of Ashtanga yoga asana practice. The space is intimate, and right on the water, and the owner, Kat, is warm and welcoming. I am extrememly grateful to her for opening a space for Madison ashtangis to practice together! Highly recommended : )

My daughter has had many issues in the past going new places alone or being involved in groups. By day 2 of Zen Turtle Summer Camp with Kat she walked into the studio happily ALONE. She has gained more confidence in the last week with Kat than I have seen her gain in MONTHS in other programing. Thank you Monona Yoga!!!!

Monona Yoga Center shows a real focus and tradition based on yoga as a spiritual and mental practice, on top of the physical challenges and heights you can accomplish with a steady practice. I'm so happy that the center has opened a Mysore Ashtanga program in the morning to start my day, and I have had the chance to take two workshops with authorized Ashtanga teachers (that's two more than I could in the last year here in Madison--with many more to come!). Beyond the Ashtanga program, I love the variety of classes--always vinyasa-style teaching most evenings winding down with yin-style classes. The teachers look out for the students and get to know everyone individually. It's a real community here with so many events to meet like-minded yogis!

New beautiful spot with the studio open to the Yahara River. I did a Hatha class with Haley and it was great! Easily differentiated and a great energy.
I followed that with an Ashtsnga session with Kat. She was wonderful, opening with a whole group mantra and Om for dedication. The flow was challenging and powerful.
Awesome experience.
